A theoretical model is described of the mean two-dimensional flow of homogeneous charge in a flat-bottomed cylindrical tank with radial baffles and six-blade turbine disc impeller. The model starts from the concept of vorticity transport in the bulk of vortex liquid flow through the mechanism of eddy diffusion characterized by a constant value of turbulent (eddy) viscosity. The result of solution of the equation which is analogous to the Stokes simplification of equations of motion for creeping flow is the description of field of the stream function and of the axial and radial velocity components of mean flow in the whole charge. The results of modelling are compared with the experimental and theoretical data published by different authors, a good qualitative and quantitative agreement being stated. Advantage of the model proposed is a very simple schematization of the system volume necessary to introduce the boundary conditions (only the parts above the impeller plane of symmetry and below it are distinguished), the explicit character of the model with respect to the model parameters (model lucidity, low demands on the capacity of computer), and, in the end, the possibility to modify the given model by changing boundary conditions even for another agitating set-up with radially-axial character of flow.

Abstract In this study, a novel swirl combustion modified device for steel slag was designed and enhanced with the objective of achieving highly efficient and clean coal combustion and also for achieving the whole elements utilization of coal. Coal ash and steel slag were melted in the combustion chamber and subsequently entered the slag chamber. The detrimental substances solidified and formed crystals, which allowed for the comprehensive utilization of the ash and slag. Our experiments mainly aimed to mitigate the formation of NOx, while using the heat and slag simultaneously during the coal combustion without a combustion efficiency penalty. The increase in the device’s energy efficiency and reduction in the NOx emissions are important requirements for industrialization. The experiments were carried out in an optimized swirling combustion device, which had a different structure and various coal feeding conditions in comparison to previously reported devices. The fuel-staged and non-staged combustion experiments were compared under different coal ratios (bitumite:anthracite). For the fuel-staged combustion experiments, the NOx concentration in the flue gas was observed to decrease significantly when the coal ratio of 1:1, an excess air coefficient of 1.2, and a fuel-staged ratio of 15:85 were used. Under these conditions, the flue gas temperature was as high as 1,620°C, while the NOx concentration was as low as 320 mg/m3 at 6 % O2. The air-surrounding-fuel structure that formed in the furnace was very beneficial in reducing the formation of NOx. In comparison to other types of coal burners, the experimental combustion device designed in this study achieved a significant reduction of NOx emissions (approximately 80 %).

AbstractVorticity transport is analysed within the leading-edge vortex generated on a rectangular flat plate of aspect ratio 4 undergoing a starting rotation motion in a quiescent fluid. Two analyses are conducted on the inboard half of the blade to better understand the vorticity transport mechanisms responsible for maintaining the quasi-equilibrium state of the leading-edge vortex. An initial global analysis between the $25$ and $50\, \%$ spanwise positions suggests that, although spanwise velocity is significant, spanwise convection of vorticity is insufficient to balance the flux of vorticity from the leading-edge shear layer. Subsequent detailed analyses of vorticity transport in planar control volumes at the $25$ and $50\, \%$ spanwise positions verify this conclusion and demonstrate that vorticity annihilation due to interaction between the leading-edge vortex and the opposite-sign layer on the plate surface is an important, often dominant, mechanism for regulation of leading-edge-vortex circulation. Thus, it provides an important condition for maintenance of an attached leading-edge vortex on the inboard portion of the blade.

Abstract A compact high-order finite difference method on unstructured meshes is developed for discretization of the unsteady vorticity transport equations (VTE) for 2-D incompressible flow. The algorithm is based on the Flux Reconstruction Method of Huynh [1, 2], extended to evaluate a Poisson equation for the streamfunction to enforce the kinematic relationship between the velocity and vorticity fields while satisfying the continuity equation. Unlike other finite difference methods for the VTE, where the wall vorticity is approximated by finite differencing the second wall-normal derivative of the streamfunction, the new method applies a Neumann boundary condition for the diffusion of vorticity such that it cancels the slip velocity resulting from the solution of the Poisson equation for the streamfunction. This yields a wall vorticity with order of accuracy consistent with that of the overall solution. In this paper, the high-order VTE solver is formulated and results presented to demonstrate the accuracy and convergence rate of the Poisson solution, as well as the VTE solver using benchmark problems of 2-D flow in lid-driven cavity and backward facing step channel at various Reynolds numbers.
