Revolution without regime change: The evidence from the post-Euromaidan Ukraine

What effects does a revolution have on the stability or change of a hybrid regime? Has the Ukraine’s regime changed since the 2014 revolution? To answer these questions I examine the changes in formal and informal institutions and the quantitative and qualitative composition of elites after the change of power in Ukraine in 2014. I argue that despite greater than in the post-orange period quantitative renewal of elites, qualitative change has not occurred. Meanwhile, the old operational code, or modus operandi, of elites’ political culture, composed of clientelism, secretive deals and quota based nominations to government positions continues to operate. The lack of elites’ renewal and the dominance of informal rules over formal procedures — two factors that keep the institutional core of Ukraine’s hybrid regime unchanged.

We reported previously that early meiotic transcripts are highly unstable. These mRNAs exhibit half-lives of approximately 3 min when expressed during vegetative growth in glucose medium and are stabilized twofold during sporulation in acetate medium. Two genes, UME2 and UME5, that regulate the stability of meiosis-specific transcripts have been identified. The wild-type UME5 gene, which has been analyzed in detail, decreases the stability of all meiotic mRNAs tested approximately twofold when expressed during vegetative growth but has no effect on the half-lives of a number of vegetative mRNAs examined. The UME5 gene is dispensable for mitotic and meiotic development. Cells in which the entire UME5 gene has been deleted are viable, although the generation time is slightly longer and sporulation is less efficient. The UME5 transcript is constitutively expressed, and its stability is not autoregulated. The UME5 gene encodes a predicted 63-kDa protein with homology to the family of CDC28 serine/threonine-specific protein kinases. The kinase activity appears to be central to the function of the UME5 protein, since alteration of a highly conserved amino acid in the kinase domain results in a phenotype identical to that of a ume5 deletion. Genetic epistasis studies suggest that the UME2 and UME5 gene products act in the same pathway to regulate meiotic transcript stability. This pathway is independent of deadenylation and translation, two factors known to be important in regulating mRNA turnover. Significantly, the UME5-mediated destabilization of meiotic mRNAs occurs in glucose- but not in acetate-containing medium. Thus, the UME5 gene appears to participate in a glucose signal transduction pathway governing message stability.

In the troubling sixteenth century political and religious turmoil in Europe - and particularly in France - the cosmopolitan personality of Michel de Montaigne is not only indicative for acknowledging the more and more meddling resources of culture within the realm of politics, but is also explanatory for reforming and expanding the instruments of traditional diplomacy. Specifically, the consequential insights of Montaigne's post-Renaissance humanist stance highly impacted upon certain salient developments in the field of cultural diplomacy that could be analytically framed as i) a personal imprint on reforming political culture(s) tantamount to a conspicuous signature in the field of cultural pedagogy, and ii) a commendable approach to cultural pluralism, and an influential modus operandi in the practice of cultural relations. The present study purports to reflect upon the rise of modern cultural diplomacy through highlighting the impact of the above-mentioned traits on further developments of the field in one of the most characteristic figures of early modernity, Michel de Montaigne.

Models to predict days to growth and probability of growth of Zygosaccharomyces bailii in high-acid foods were developed, and the equations are presented here. The models were constructed from measurements of growth of Z. bailii using automated turbidimetry over a 29-day period at various pH, NaCl, fructose, and acetic acid levels. Statistical analyses were carried out using Statistical Analysis Systems LIFEREG procedures, and the data were fitted to log-logistic models. Model 1 predicts days to growth based on two factors, combined molar concentration of salt plus sugar and undissociated acetic acid. This model allows a growth/no-growth boundary to be visualized. The boundary is comparable with that established by G. Tuynenburg Muys (Process Biochem. 6:25–28, 1971), which still forms the basis of industry assumptions about the stability of acidic foods. Model 2 predicts days to growth based on the four independent factors of salt, sugar, acetic acid, and pH levels and is, therefore, much more useful for product development. Validation data derived from challenge studies in retail products from the U.S. market are presented for Model 2, showing that the model gives reliable, fail-safe predictions and is suitable for use in predicting growth responses of Z. bailii in high-acid foods. Model 3 predicts probability of growth of Z. bailii in 29 days. This model is most useful for spoilage risk assessment. All three models showed good agreement between predictions and observed values for the underlying data.

1. Stability and potential of Bacterium coli suspensions depend, not only on the strain of the organism and the medium in which it is suspended, but also on the previous treatment of the suspension, and the length of time it has been in the medium. 2. When treated at acid reactions, the negative charge on the bacteria is diminished; with some strains, a positive charge is acquired. Changes in stability accompany the changes in potential. 3. Washing acid-treated bacteria at neutral or slightly alkaline reactions does not restore the original potential; the zone of flocculation is moved toward the alkaline side. 4. These changes are due to two factors: the extraction of a soluble protein which combines with the surfaces of the cells, and a further irreversible change of the cell or its membrane.

AbstractMajor changes in the postwar global environment have transformed “the” German question into many German questions that continue to complicate the foreign and domestic policy-making processes in the Federal Republic. Inconsistencies between official policy pronouncements and the accepted political modus operandi are explainable in terms of four “paradoxes”: (1) the nation/state identity paradox; (2) the reunification/integration paradox; (3) the stability/security paradox; and (4) the lessons-of-history/normalcy paradox. West German commitment to the Atlantic Alliance remains unshaken, but the FRG should not be forced to choose between the U.S. and Europe, between integration with the West and further improvement in relations with the GDR. Normalization of those relations will be best served by a mutual adherence to the principles of balance, territorial integrity, confidence building and greater transparency in matters of inter-German decision making.

<p>Lipid and fatty acids are two factors determining reproductive performance of fish and survival rate of hatched larvae. Lipid has important role as energy source and to maintain the stability of membrane permeability.  The requirement of fatty acids differs among fish species.  Freshwater fishes need more n-6 than n-3 fatty acids, or appropriate combination of them.  In several fish species, feeding HUFA increase their fecundity, fertilization rate and eggs quality.  In this study, zebra fish, <em>Danio rerio</em> were fed with diet containing 0% n-3 essential fatty acids and different n-6 level; 0, 1 and 2%.  The result showed that there were no significant differences in gonado somatic index and several reproductive performances observed.  However, 1% of n-6 fatty acids supplementation produced a higher protein and lipid content in the body by 16.85% and 55.10%, respectively.</p> <p>Keywords: fatty acid, n-3, n-6, <em>Danio rerio</em>, reproductive performance</p> <p> </p> <p>ABSTRAK</p> <p>Lemak dan asam lemak merupakan faktor yang sangat mempengaruhi performa reproduksi dan kelangsungan hidup larva yang menetas. Lemak berperan penting sebagai sumber energi dan menjaga kestabilan permeabilitas membran. Kebutuhan asam lemak berbeda untuk setiap jenis ikan.  Ikan air tawar biasanya lebih banyak membutuhkan asam lemak <em>n</em>-6 daripada asam lemak <em>n</em>-3 atau campuran asam lemak <em>n</em>-6 dan <em>n</em>-3. Pada beberapa ikan , pemberian HUFA melalui pakan induk dapat meningkatkan fekunditas, derajat pembuahan dan kualitas telur.  Pada penelitian ini ikan zebra diberi pakan mengandung asam lemak esensial dengan kadar <em>n</em>-3 tetap (0%) dan <em>n</em>-6 berbeda yaitu 0, 1 dan 2%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan nyata terhadap nilai Gonado Somatik Indeks serta beberapa parameter penampilan reproduksi lainnya pada ikan zebra, <em>Danio rerio</em>. Namun kadar asam lemak <em>n</em>-3 sebesar 0% dan <em>n</em>-6 sebesar 1% menghasilkan kadar protein dan kadar lemak tubuh tertinggi yang masing-masing mencapai 16,85% dan 55,10%</p> <p>Kata kunci: asam lemak,  <em>n</em>-3, <em>n</em>-6, <em>Danio rerio</em>, performa reproduksi</p>

Pandanus fruit is a part of Pandanus tectorius plant that has a yellow to orange color. Pandanus fruit has the potential to be a natural source of yellow and orange dye. The dye obtained from pandanus fruit has unstable properties. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of pH and temperature on the stability of carotenoids from pandanus fruit and to determine the pH and temperature that can maintain the stability of pandanus fruit extract during storage. The experiment of this study used Completely Randomized Design with two factors. The first factor was acidity (pH) that consisted of three levels: pH 4, 7, and 10. The second factor was temperature that consisted of two levels: 4±3ºC and 28±3ºC. The results showed that acidity (pH) had very significant effect (P<0.01) and temperature had significant effect (P<0.05) on carotenoids. The dye extract of pandanus fruit was more stable at the storage conditions of pH 7 (neutral) and cold temperature (4±3ºC) during 4 weeks storage with decreased of carotenoids was 34.29%. In literature it was not possible to find a proven valid and reliable scale to measure students’ attitudes towards engineering profession and engineering education. The objective of present research is to provide a valid and reliable scale for measuring students’ attitudes towards engineering profession and engineering education. The sample group is composed of 650 students for the first application and 113 students for the second. In order to detect the validity of the scale, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, item factor total correlations, corrected correlations and item discriminations were conducted. In order to assess the reliability of the scale, the level of internal consistency and the stability levels were calculated. EEAS a five-point Likert-type scale and includes 17 items with two factors. The analyses provided evidence that EEAS is a valid and reliable scale that can be assuredly used to identify students’ attitudes towards engineering profession and education they receive.

This article analyzes the phenomenon of dolls in the process of transition from the traditional type of society to the postindustrial one. The authors outline that being a kind of mirror of the era, the doll phenomenon is inextricably linked with cultural norms and values, all social experience, which determined the stability and continuity of various activities. It is also noted that in the process of historical development, the image of the doll undergoes transformation, as does the image of the person himself. The inclusion by the authors the axiological characteristics of the doll phenomenon in the worldview coordinates of cosmo- and anthropocentrism makes it possible to reveal their new quality. The consideration of the doll as a phenomenon from this methodological position opens up new possibilities in understanding the existential essence of man himself. The purpose of the article is to analyze one of the most relevant aspects of the doll phenomenon in modern conditions – a qualitative change in its axiological content and significance in culture. Research methods: historical-comparative and semiotic. The result of the study is the identification of significant changes in the role of dolls in modern culture. It is emphasized that the value orientations of secular society and a desacralized, materialistic worldview result in dehumanization and objectification of the person himself with a pronounced desire to revitalize and humanize the doll. The development of anthropocentric attitudes has reached its limits, as evidenced by the shift in the semantics of dolls into the field of purely formal, external relations and meanings.

The article analyzes the transformation of the political image of Frederick Chiluba, President of the Republic of Zambia in 1991-2001. As a representative of a new formation of African leaders in the era of the continent’s transition from authoritarianism to political pluralism, he was an ambiguous figure. His role in the return of the multi-party system in the country and in the liberalization of the national economy is discussed. It is stressed that within the framework of the existing political culture this politician was not immune to inevitable mistakes. However, the style and methods of Chilubas leadership (persecution of his predecessor, manipulation using the ethnic factor in order to retain power, ignoring criticism of the opposition and allies) periodically led to tension in the internal situation in the country and negatively affected his political image and the image of the government in general.In 1990-2000s the negative impact of tensions between Zambian politicians who held the presidency at different times on the stability of the country was clearly manifested. The persecution of ex-President Chiluba charged with corruption demonstrated the authorities’ policy to combat this social evil, but it was ambiguously perceived and interpreted by the society and by analysts. It is noted that for all the mistakes and shortcomings of Chilubas ten-year rule, it is necessary to recognize his merits in creating the economic base of Zambia and in proclaiming it a Christian country, which was practically forgotten after his death.The article shows the gradual rehabilitation of Chilubas memory, in which all living ex-presidents and the current Head of State take part. The experience of Zambia shows that under African realities, former presidents enjoy honors and certain privileges, provided they do not participate actively in politics and do not enter into open conflicts with their successors.
