Epoxy resins with acidic compounds feature adhesion, robustness, and deoxidizing ability. In this study, hybrid adhesive films with deoxidizing and curing capabilities for semiconductor packaging were fabricated. The compatibilizing effects and mechanical properties were chiefly investigated by using various additive binders (thermoplastic amorphous polymers) and compatibilizing agents. The curing, deoxidizing, thermal, and rheological properties were systematically investigated. For uniform film formation and maximizing deoxidizing curable abilities, a thermoplastic--thermoset mixture containing a phenyl and carboxylic acid-based additive (benzoic acid), and a polycarbonate was chosen as the model adhesive film. Without either a phenyl or an acidic group in the compatibilizing agent, deoxidizing and compatibilizing effects were not achieved. The manufactured hybrid adhesive film can be effectively used, especially for electronic devices that require deoxidization and adhesion.

Maleic anhydride (MA) grafted with poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)—abbreviated as PTT-g-MA—can be used as a compatibilizing agent to improve the compatibility and dispersion of nanofillers and a dispersed polymer phase into PTT matrix. This work suggests the preparation of PTT-g-MA using a mixture of PTT, MA, and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) by a reactive extrusion process. PTT-g-MA was characterized to confirm the grafting reaction of maleic anhydride on PTT chains by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Thermal properties (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)) and rheological analysis (parallel plates rheology) were used to prove the changes that occurred after the graphitization reaction. The reactive processing route allowed the production of the compatibilizing agent (PTT-g-MA) with good thermal properties and with lower viscosity compared to neat PTT, and this could be an alternative for the compatibilization of polymer blends, as example for PTT/ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) blends and nanocomposites based on PTT matrix.

The effects of the addition of epoxidized natural rubber/maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene blend as a compatibilizing agent (CA) on the properties of natural rubber (NR)/polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic elastomer blend were studied. The blends were prepared in the molten state at 180°C using a Brabender Plasticorder at a rotor speed of 60 r min−1. Evidence of compatibilization was obtained from the Brabender plastograms and from the mechanical properties results as well as the morphological analysis. It was found that the addition of the CA at different contents resulted in an increase of the tensile strength and Young’s modulus and a decrease of the elongation at break. It was also found that the melting temperature remained unchanged, the % crystallinity decreased, but the thermal stability was not affected. The morphology revealed a more homogeneous distribution of the dispersed PP phase for the CA-containing systems compared to the control NR/PP blend. These effects were attributed to the interactions that developed with the blend constituents through the functional groups of the CA.
