The effect of the mechanical heterogeneity on the global and local tensile properties of laser-arc hybrid welded joints in industrial pure aluminum has been investigated. Digital image correlation method has been used during tensile test for mapping the strain distribution and to determine the local stress-strain curves of FZ and HAZ. The tensile properties of the various regions are very heterogeneous and HAZ is the weakest region because of the strain localizes during tensile test. Finite element technique was used to model the global response of welded joint based on local constitutive properties which could be determined from DIC results.

Cell mechanical stretching in vitro is a fundamental technique commonly used in cardiovascular mechanobiology research. Accordingly, it is crucial to measure the accurate strain field of cell substrate under different strains. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a widely used measurement technique, which is able to obtain the accurate displacement and strain distribution. However, the traditional DIC algorithm used in digital image correlation engine (DICe) cannot obtain accurate result when utilized in large strain measurement. In this paper, an improved method aiming to acquire accurate strain distribution of substrate in large deformation was proposed, to evaluate the effect and accuracy, based on numerical experiments. The results showed that this method was effective and highly accurate. Then, we carried out uniaxial substrate stretching experiments and applied our method to measure strain distribution of the substrate. The proposed method could obtain accurate strain distribution of substrate film during large stretching, which would allow researchers to adequately describe the response of cells to different strains of substrate.

Heterogeneous deformation measurement using traditional digital image correlation (DIC) has times error of homogeneous deformation due to localized complexity. In case of small strain window, displacement field error will substantially corrupt the derived strain. On the contrary, large strain window will induce a reasonable information reduction in particular of heterogeneous deformation. In this paper, a novel parameter was put forward to correct displacement field and select strain subset size dynamically. This parameter was determined by localized displacement field that is called the localized displacement non-uniform intensity [Formula: see text]. In addition, there is a simple and effective method to eliminate the rigid body rotation impact on strain measurement. A series of speckle images containing different heterogeneous deformation are simulated finally. Results show that the accuracy on the displacement and strain field can be substantially improved especially in heterogeneous deformation fields.
