The natural occurrence of the first diterpene in the roots of Pelargonium reniforme (Geraniaceae) is demonstrated. The unique metabolite, reniformin, represents an ester in which a novel diterpene acid with an uncommon -CH2-CH2-bridging element is linked to 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethansulfonic acid. The latter entity has also hitherto not been encountered as a component in natural products. The structure of reniformin was established on the basis of spectroscopic methods.

The structure of the non irritant diterpene ester 4a-sapinine, isolated from Sapium indicum Willd. (Euphorbiaceae) is deduced to be 13-O-acetyl-4-deoxy-12-O-(N-methylanthraniloyl)-4a-phorbol. It is the first diterpene ester alkaloid of the tigliane type.

A single-crystal X-ray structure determination on the diacetate derivative of the major diterpene ester isolated from the neutral extract of P. lepidota (Verbenaceae) has shown it to be methyl (13E)-6α,18-diacetoxycleroda-3,13-dien-15-oate.

One new diterpene ester with a tricyclic lathyrane-or myrsinol-type skeleton has been isolated from Euphorbia decipiens Boiss.&Buhse. In addition to one new, the known constituents β-amyrin, β-amyrin acetate, methyl (2,4-dihydroxy-3-formyl-6-methoxy) phenyl ketone (2), and 1,1-bis (2,6-dihydroxy-3-acetyl-4-methoxyphenyl) methane (3) have been isolated from the same source. The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was based primarily on 1D and 2D-NMR analysis, including COSY, HMQC, HMBC and NOESY correlations. Compound 1 showed inhibitory activity against prolyl endopeptidase, and also analgesic activity
