Parton showers for deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are studied. Forward and backward evolution algorithms are constructed using the same definitions for splitting and evolution variables. We discuss features of two algorithms and examine algorithm dependence of final parton distributions.

We obtain improved parton distributions from a structure function analysis which includes new data on deep inelastic scattering and on dilepton production. These lead to improved predictions for σ(W)/σ(Z), which when combined with the forthcoming data from [Formula: see text] colliders, will give tighter constraints on the values of mt and Ny. We emphasize how new measurements of the W± charge asymmetry may resolve the EMC — BCDMS F2 discrepancy and hence sharpen the prediction for σ(W)/σ(Z) even further.

Unpolarised semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering is receiving a growing interest as a powerful tool to access poorly known transverse momentum dependent parton distributions and fragmentation functions that play a key role in many processes, in particular in the study of the spin structure of the nucleon. These functions can be investigated through experimental observables. New results on these observables by the COMPASS experiment at CERN will be shown and discussed.
