We present results from our recent lattice QCD study of Nπ scattering in the positive-parity nucleon channel, where the puzzling Roper resonance N*(1440) resides in experiment. Using a variety of hadron operators, that include qqq-like, Nπ in p-wave and Nσ in s-wave, we systematically extract the excited lattice spectrum in the nucleon channel up to 1.65 GeV. Our lattice results indicate that Nπ scattering in the elastic approximation alone does not describe a low-lying Roper. Coupled channel effects between Nπ and Nππ seem to be crucial to render a low-lying Roper in experiment, reinforcing the notion that this state could be a dynamically generated resonance. After giving a brief motivation for studying the Roper channel and the relevant technical details to this study, we will discuss the results and the conclusions based on our lattice investigation and in comparison with other lattice calculations.

By applying a spatially extended sink operator, the nucleon two-point functions are calculated in Coulomb gauge from quenched lattice QCD with overlap fermions. The Bethe-Salpeter wave functions of nucleon and Roper resonance are extracted at different quark masses. The typical size of nucleon is about 0.7 fm, which seems insensitive to the quark masses involved in this work. It is also found that the wave function of Roper has a radial node.

The Subject

The origin of the low-lying position of the Roper resonance in the nucleon energy spectrum has been the subject of significant interest for many years, including several investigations using lattice QCD. It has been claimed that chiral symmetry plays an important role in our understanding of this resonance. We present results from our systematic examination of the potential role of chiral symmetry in the low-lying nucleon spectrum through the direct comparison of the clover and overlap fermion actions. After a brief summary of the background motivation, we specify the computational details of the study and outline our comparison methodologies. We do not find any evidence supporting the claim that chiral symmetry plays a significant role in understanding the Roper resonance on the lattice.
