We show that first-quantized-style Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin operators, such as those which occur in string field theory, are just those of the Batalin-Vilkovisky method, up to some minor modifications. Thus, string field theory can be quantized directly, without fields additional to the original one.

We consider one-loop vacuum energy at the tachyon vacuum in cubic bosonic open string field theory. The BRST operator Ql in the theory around an identity-based solution is believed to represent a kinetic operator at the tachyon vacuum. Using homotopy operators for Ql, we find that one-loop vacuum energy at the tachyon vacuum is independent of moduli such as interbrane distances. This result can be interpreted as support for the annihilation of D-branes at the tachyon vacuum even in the quantum theory.

In the BRST approach to first quantization, bosonic ghosts can cause ambiguities in the cohomology (and thus in second quantization). We show how nonminimal terms give a general solution to this problem, avoiding the need for “picture-changing operators.” As examples, we consider spinning particles, superparticles, covariantized light cone bosonic string field theory, and NSR superstring field theory.
