We report low-temperature magnetotransport in the normal state of the electron-doped superconductors, Nd 2-x Ce x CuO 4, Pr 2-x Ce x CuO 4, and La 2-x Ce x CuO 4, by suppressing the superconductivity with high magnetic fields. The normal state ρ-T curve shows an up-turn at low temperatures, which has a log T dependence with saturation at lowest temperatures. The up-turn is gradually suppressed with increasing magnetic field, resulting in negative magnetoresistance. We discuss these findings on the basis of the Kondo scattering originating from the magnetic moments of Cu 2+ ions.

Electron transport properties of quantum wires in the presence of a periodically modulated magnetic field are investigated. For a short modulated wire, we find dips in conductance just below each mode threshold. The conductance dips are quite robust at low temperature. Increasing the number of periods of magnetic modulation can lead to the formation of minibands and gaps. The differences between the one dimensional (1D) electric superlattice and 1D magnetic superlattice are discussed. We also consider the spatial distributions of currents, which show dramatic differences between the magnetic superlattices and electric ones.

We report the study of a promising Ge -based magnetic heterojunction diode composed of a Mn -doped p - Ge film grown on lightly doped n - Ge film. Magnetic field dependent current rectification of the diode occurs at a low temperature. The measurements of resistivity and magnetoresistance in plane at low temperatures reveal the presence of impurity band in Ge due to Mn doping.

A 3 T superconducting magnet has been designed and constructed for magnetic Compton-profile (MCP) measurements with the new capabilities that the magnetic field direction can be altered quickly (within 5 s) and liquid-He refill is not required for more than one week. For the latter capability, two refrigerators have been directly attached to the cryostat to maintain the low temperature of the radiation shields and for the recondensation of liquid He. The system has been satisfactorily operated for over one week.
