In this work, the interface composition of the superconducting Ti/PdAu bilayer is tuned by an annealing process in N2 from 100 to 500 °C to control the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). This Ti-PdAu composition layer is characterized with a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) to show the infiltration process. The surface topography, electrical, and cryogenic properties are also shown. The inter-infiltration of Ti and PdAu induced by the thermal treatments generates an intermixed layer at the interface of the bilayer film. Due to the enforced proximity effect by the annealing process, the Tc of Ti (55 nm)/PdAu (60 nm) bilayer thin films is tuned from an initial value of 243 to 111 mK which is a temperature that is suitable for the application as the function unit of a superconducting transition edge sensor.

We have investigated epitaxial superconducting SmBa2Cu3O7 (Sm123) films grown by pulsed-laser deposition on single-crystal SrTiO3 substrates. The deposition temperature plays an important role in determining the superconducting properties of Sm123 films. The superconducting transition temperature increases with the deposition temperature whereas the transition width decreases at deposition temperatures in the range of 700–875 °C. A Sm123 film deposited at 850 °C exhibits a transition temperature above 93 K with a transition width less than 0.5 K. Even though Sm123 films exhibit a higher transition temperature than Yba2Cu3O7 (Y123), the Sm123 shows lower critical current density at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The nominal critical current density of Sm123 film is less than 1 MA/cm2 at 75.4 K. Nevertheless, the Sm123 films have less anisotropy and stronger pinning characteristics compared to Y123. They are also much smoother with fewer particulates, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract. Nitrate photolysis in the wavelength range 250–1200 nm was studied on ice in a controlled laboratory experiment. Monolayer coverage of nitrate was achieved by dosing well-known amounts of HNO3 from the gas phase onto a frozen water surface. Fluxes of HONO and NO2 into the gas phase with time were quantified at temperatures between 193 K and 258 K and as a function of illumination wavelength in the range: 250–345 nm. Whereas HONO release showed a strong temperature dependence at colder temperatures, attributed to reversible adsorption processes, NO2 fluxes were independent of temperature. The observed fluxes of HONO and NO2 at high temperature were not affected by diffusion or adsorption processes, and could be used to estimate a quantum yield for HONO formation of (3.8±0.6)×10−4. A different wavelength dependence for HONO and NO2 fluxes indicates that additional reactions besides nitrate photolysis and subsequent release of the products contribute to the emission of nitrogen oxides.

ABSTRACTEpitaxial B1-structure TiN/NbN superlattices have been grown by reactive magnetron sputtering On MgO(001). X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) diffraction spectra exhibited up to nine orders of superlattice reflections, indicating that the superlattice interfaces were relatively sharp. TEM images also showed well-defined layers. The superlattice wavelength (∧) dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), critical Current density (Jc), and electrical resistivity (ρ) have been investigated. Tc values increased from 12 K to 17 K with increasing ∧. Jc in a magnetic field perpendicular to the film surface ranged from 104 to 106 A/cm2, increasing with increasing wavelength and decreasing with increasing applied magnetic field. Jc in a field parallel to the film surface was > 10 times higher, ≈ 107 A/cm2. The resistivity exhibited different ∧ dependencies in three different A ranges.
