SUMMARY Old male rats of 22–24 months and young ones of 3–5 months were studied to find the effects of ageing, of orchidectomy and of orchidectomy and treatment with testosterone propionate (TP) on the basal serum concentrations of thyrotrophin (TSH) and on the total and free concentrations of tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) in the serum. The changes in TSH after treatment with thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH) were also observed. Intact old rats had significantly (P < 0·001) lower basal T4 and T3 as well as lower (P < 0·05) testosterone concentrations than were present in young rats. They also had higher basal TSH and per cent free T4 but lower absolute free T3 concentrations than had young rats. Two weeks after orchidectomy, basal TSH concentrations were slightly but significantly (P < 0·05) decreased in both young and old rats while T4 decreased significantly (P < 0·05) only in the young. The responses of TSH to TRH were also reduced by orchidectomy in both age groups with the old rats being less responsive than the young. Orchidectomy and treatment with pharmacological doses of TP produced similar effects on the pituitary-thyrotrophic response for both old and young rats but a greater effect occurred in the basal T4 response in young rats. In all groups basal TSH was influenced by orchidectomy or by treatment with TP but was always higher in the aged rat. Tri-iodothyronine concentration was always lower in the older rat and was not altered by orchidectomy or by treatment with TP in either young or old rats. These results indicate that (1) in the male rat these age-specific effects on the thyroid–pituitary system are probably due, not only to a reduction in thyroid gland function and plasma T4 protein-binding, but also to a concomitant hyporesponsiveness of the aged male rat pituitary thyrotroph to TRH stimulation and (2) there is probably a significant influence of testicular function on the pituitary–thyroid system of the male rat.

Abstract. Legally irrelevant information like facial features is used to form judgments about rape cases. Using a reverse-correlation technique, it is possible to visualize criminal stereotypes and test whether these representations influence judgments. In the first step, images of the stereotypical faces of a rapist, a thief, and a lifesaver were generated. These images showed a clear distinction between the lifesaver and the two criminal representations, but the criminal representations were rather similar. In the next step, the images were presented together with rape scenarios, and participants (N = 153) indicated the defendant’s level of liability. Participants with high rape myth acceptance scores attributed a lower level of liability to a defendant who resembled a stereotypical lifesaver. However, no specific effects of the image of the stereotypical rapist compared to the stereotypical thief were found. We discuss the findings with respect to the influence of visual stereotypes on legal judgments and the nature of these mental representations.

SummaryAged rats are more susceptible to endotoxin-induced effects, including microthrombosis and platelet aggregation, than are young rats. To investigate whether changes in the fibrinolytic system might be involved, we investigated the fibrinolytic activity in plasma euglobulin fractions and tissues (lung and heart) of young (6-months old) and aged (24-months old) rats under baseline conditions and after challenge with endotoxin. Aged rats had lower plasma levels of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) and of urokinase-type PA (u-PA) activity. PA inhibitor (PAI) activity was higher in the plasma of aged rats, as was t-PA activity in lung and heart.Rats were treated with either a low dose (1 μg/kg) or a high dose (10 mg/kg) of endotoxin. Both treatments induced a transient phase of increased blood fibrinolytic activity, as evidenced by higher levels of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) activity and decreased levels of PA inhibitor (PAI) activity. Over time, the fibrinolytic activity decreased, probably due to increased levels of PA inhibitor.Both the early increase in t-PA activity, and the subsequent increase in PAI activity, were more pronounced in the aged rats, as compared with the younger rats, after the high dose of endotoxin. The aged rats also responded to an injection of interleukin-1β or tumor necrosis factor-α with a larger increase of PAI activity than did the younger rats.Together the data suggest that, compared to young rats, aged rats have a decreased base-line plasma fibrinolytic activity, while their fibrinolytic system is more responsive to challenge by endotoxin and cytokines.
