AbstractCorrelations between three characteristic temperatures: glass transition, Tg, Kauzmann, Tk, and Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann, To, were identified from the analysis of more than 60 metallic and non-metallic glass-forming materials. It was found that Tg ≥ Tk ≥ To and Tk is the geometric mean of Tg and To. The relation Tk ≥ To indicates that the excess total entropy of a super-cooled liquid ΔS approaches zero at a higher temperature than the configurational entropy ΔSconf, and such behavior was explained by the stronger temperature dependence of the excess vibrational entropy of the liquid, ΔSvib, than that of the corresponding glass, . A relationship between the fragility index m, reduced excess heat capacity ΔCp(Tg)/Sm, and reduced glass transition temperature, Trg, was identified using the found correlation between the characteristic temperatures.

The compositional dependence of glass formation and thermal and elastic properties was clarified for the ternary La–Al–Co bulk glass-forming system. The existing linear correlation between La concentration and characteristic temperatures, i.e., the glass transition temperature Tg and the onset temperature of crystallization Tx, as well as the elastic moduli in this system can give a useful guideline for the chemical design of desirable bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with tunable physical properties in advance. The relationship between Tg and elastic constants for the La–Al–Co BMGs can be quantitatively described using a microscopic model proposed by T. Egami.

The meaning of experimentally determined characteristic temperatures is analyzed in terms of Hruby glass forming criterion. Despite various analyzed modifications it reveals that the sensitivity of original criterion is unsurpassable. The applicability of Sestak-Berggren empirical equation for the description of crystallisation kinetics is comparable with the classical modelling based on Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation. Their employment is certainly dependent to the purpose of evaluation showing their substitution ability and limits.
