Nonlinear dynamics of an optical pulse or a beam continue to be one of the active areas of research in the field of optical solitons. Especially, in multi-mode fibers or fiber arrays and photorefractive materials, the vector solitons display rich nonlinear phenomena. Due to their fascinating and intriguing novel properties, the theory of optical vector solitons has been developed considerably both from theoretical and experimental points of view leading to soliton-based promising potential applications. Mathematically, the dynamics of vector solitons can be understood from the framework of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) family of equations. In the recent past, many types of vector solitons have been identified both in the integrable and non-integrable CNLS framework. In this article, we review some of the recent progress in understanding the dynamics of the so called nondegenerate vector bright solitons in nonlinear optics, where the fundamental soliton can have more than one propagation constant. We address this theme by considering the integrable two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger family of equations, namely the Manakov system, mixed 2-CNLS system (or focusing-defocusing CNLS system), coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CCNLS) system, generalized coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (GCNLS) system and two-component long-wave short-wave resonance interaction (LSRI) system. In these models, we discuss the existence of nondegenerate vector solitons and their associated novel multi-hump geometrical profile nature by deriving their analytical forms through the Hirota bilinear method. Then we reveal the novel collision properties of the nondegenerate solitons in the Manakov system as an example. The asymptotic analysis shows that the nondegenerate solitons, in general, undergo three types of elastic collisions without any energy redistribution among the modes. Furthermore, we show that the energy sharing collision exhibiting vector solitons arises as a special case of the newly reported nondegenerate vector solitons. Finally, we point out the possible further developments in this subject and potential applications.

Large wood (LW) disasters, which often accompany sediment-related disasters, occur worldwide. To prevent and mitigate such disasters, we developed a unique LW trap featuring horizontal rods aligned with the flow. When LW enters the trap, it is scooped up by the rods and thus separated from water and sediment. We explored trapping efficacy using a flume of slope 0.087. Water circulated at a constant rate of 1.8 L/s, LW was added to the flow, and the trapping rates were measured. We focused on the relative wood length (Lw) with respect to the horizontal rod spacing (Sr), the number of LW units supplied, and the supply rate. A longer relative length (Lw/Sr) of LW was associated with a higher trapping rate. The trapping rate was also high when the LW number or supply rate was high. The critical Lw/Sr value was 1.5; below this value, LW was not trapped. This study yields the basic information needed to design traps featuring horizontal rods to mitigate LW-related disasters.

The quantum Hall effect for the GaAs/AlGaAs heterostrcture is investigated by an ac capacitance measurement between the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) and the gate on GaAs/AlGaAs. The capacitance minima at the quantum Hall plateaus are mainly determined not by the 2DES area under the gate but by the edge length of 2DES. There exists the high conductive region due to the edge states along the 2DES boundary, when the bulk conductivity σxx is small enough at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. From the temperature and frequency dependence of the capacitance minima, it is found that the measured capacitance consists of the contribution from the edge states and that of the bulk state, which is treated as a distributed circuit of a resistive plate with the conductivity σxx. The evaluated width of edge states from the capacitance is much larger than the magnetic length and the cyclotron radius expected from the one-electron picture. This wide width of edge states can be explained by the compressible-incompressible strip model, in which the screening effect is taken into account. Further the bulk conductivity of less than 10-12 S (S=1/Ω) is measured by the capacitance of the Corbino geometry sample, where the edge states are absent and the capacitance is determined by only σxx in this geometry. The localization of the bulk state is investigated by the obtained σxx.
