Cr3+/Ni2+ co-doped optically transparent magnesium aluminosilicate glass-ceramics containing MgAl2O4 nanocrystals have been prepared by heat-treatment. Greatly enhanced broadband near-infrared emission centered at 1216 nm in Cr3+/Ni2+ co-doped glass ceramics is observed when compared with the Ni2+ single-doped glass ceramics under 532 nm excitation. The observed enhancement of infrared emission is attributed to the energy transfer from Cr3+ to Ni2+ ions in the nanocrystalline phase, which leads to the emission due to 3T2(3F) → 3A2(3F) transition of octahedral Ni2+ ions.

Near-infrared emission properties of Dy3+-Tm3+ co-doped Ge-Ga-Sb-Se glasses were investigated. Possible energy transfer routes and the regime of donor decay were discussed. Tm3+ is found to be an efficient sensitizer on the Dy3+:1.34μm luminescence. Probable energy transfer schemes include Tm3+:3H4 → Dy3+: 6F5/2 and Tm3+:3H5 → Dy3+:6F11/2· 6H9/2. The donor (Tm3+) excitation is transferred to an acceptor (Dy3+) by direct interaction or migrates among donors by diffusion-limited regime until it comes into the vicinity of an energy acceptor where direct interaction and transfer occur.

This paper deals with broadband near-infrared luminescence properties of lead germanate glass triply doped with Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+. Samples were excited at 800 nm and 975 nm. Their emission intensities and lifetimes depend significantly on Er3+ and Tm3+ concentrations. For samples excited at 800 nm, broadband emissions corresponding to the overlapped 3H4 → 3F4 (Tm3+) and 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 (Er3+) transitions centered at 1.45 µm and 1.5 µm was identified. Measurements of decay curves confirm reduction of 3H4 (Tm3+), 2F5/2 (Yb3+) and 4I13/2 (Er3+) luminescence lifetimes and the presence of energy-transfer processes. The maximal spectral bandwidth equal to 269 nm for the 3F4 → 3H6 transition of Tm3+ suggests that our glass co-doped with Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+ is a good candidate for broadband near-infrared emission. The energy transfer from 4I13/2 (Er3+) to 3F4 (Tm3+) and cross-relaxation processes are responsible for the enhancement of broadband luminescence near 1.8 µm attributed to the 3F4 → 3H6 transition of thulium ions in lead germanate glass under excitation of Yb3+ ions at 975 nm.

In this paper, Tb3+–Yb3+ Co-doped CeF3 nanophosphors were synthesized using the microwave-assisted heating hydrothermal method (M–H). The excitation and emission spectra of the samples at room temperature show that the samples absorb ultraviolet light from 250 nm to 280 nm, and emit light at 300 nm. This corresponds to the transitions from 5D to 4F of Ce3+, 480 nm, 540 nm, 583 nm, 620 nm which correspond to the transitions from 5D4 to 7F6,5,4,3 of Tb3+, 973 nm which corresponds to the transitions from 2F5/2–2F7/2 of Yb3+. In the emission spectra, it is clear that the emission intensity of Ce3+ and Tb3+ decreases, and Yb3+ increases with increasing Yb3+. This suggests that energy transfer from Ce3+ to Yb3+, and Ce3+ to Tb3+ to Yb3+ may occur. In the near infrared emission area, it is noted that a distinct emission centered at 973 nm was observed under 260 nm excitation. This is due to transitions among the different Stark levels of 2FJ(J=5/2, 7/2) Yb3+ ions. This also suggests an energy transfer from Ce3+ ions to Tb3+ and then to Yb3+. The energy transfers from Tb3+–Yb3+ Co-doped CeF3 nanophosphors, which lead to intense NIR emissions at 900–1050 nm, match the energy of Si band gaps of Si-based solar cells. Therefore, these kinds of materials are promising candidates for applications that require modifying if solar spectrums and enhancement of conversion efficiency of Si-based solar cells.

A facile solution synthesis method was developed to produce Cs2Na0.6Ag0.4InCl6:Bi,Yb with a visible emission (400–800 nm) and an NIR emission, which originates from STEs-to-Yb3+ energy transfer.
