AbstractThe technique of aperture synthesis is well developed in radio astronomy. When applied to the optical regime, aperture synthesis allows one to partially overcome the blurring effects of the atmosphere and increase the angular resolution of large telescopes to the diffraction limit. MAPPIT (Masked APerture-Plane Interference Telescope) is a multi-element interferometer which operates at the coude focus of the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope. This instrument has recently been reconfigured to operate in a dispersed mode so that simultaneous observations in a band of wavelengths are possible. We will discuss this instrument’s new mode and present observations of the double star δ Sco and an angular diameter of the previously unresolved red giant β Gru.

Treating an imaging system as a linear system and use llinear system properties to d iscuss both coherent and incoherent imaging. Use a one dimensional pin hole camera to study the theory of incoherent imaging. Two different criteria, Rayleigh and Sparrow, are used to define the resolution limits of the camera. From the simple theory define the optical transfer function and the modulation transfer function as appropriate characterizations of complex imaging systems. A review of the human imaging system emphasizes tits idfferences with man made cameras. Coherent imaging is based on Abbe’s theory of microscopy. A simple 4f imaging system can be used to understand how spatial resolution is limited by the optical aperture and by controlling the aperture, we can enhance the edges of an image or remove noise intensity noise on a plane wave. Apodizing the aperture allows astronomers to locate planents orbiting distant stars.

Design And Construction

We discuss the design and construction of a Faraday isolator for diode laser spectroscopy using commercially available components. The design involves modelling the magnetic field of an assembly of cylindrical magnets and verifying the predictions using a sensor. We obtain an isolation ratio for optical feedback of ∼35 dB at a wavelength of 780 nm. The cost is approximately one-fourth the cost of an equivalent commercially available device. We expect that the design can be widely used in experiments in laser spectroscopy and in advanced undergraduate laboratory experiments.PACS Nos.: 01.50.Pa, 32.80.Pj, 39.25.+k, 42.62.Fi
