ABSTRACTNonlinear optical properties of two thiophene-based conjugated polymers (PTT and PDTB) were studied by the photoinduced absorption spectroscopy and the third harmonic generation spectroscopy. The results obtained with these two methods are used to estimate the value of χ(3) in these materials. Resonant χ(3) are (2.0 ± 0.2) × 10−11 e.s.u. and (1.0 ± 0.1) × 10−11 e.s.u. for PTT and PDTB, respectively. χ(3) is shown to be related to the width of the optical gap through a sixth-power law. In PTT a vibronic structure due to the C = C stretching mode appears in the χ(3) spectrum.

The theoretical investigation of interband and intraband transitions in an asymmetric biconvex lens-shaped quantum dot are considered in the presence of an external magnetic field. The selection rules for intraband transitions are obtained. The behaviors of linear and nonlinear absorption and photoluminescence spectra are observed for different temperatures and magnetic field strengths. The second and third harmonic generation coefficients as a function of the photon energy are examined both in the absence and presence of an external magnetic field.

Interests in the use of borate crystals in ultraviolet nonlinear optics have increased because all-solid-state UV lasers obtained with NLO crystals are in highly demand for scientific and industrial applications. Recently, new borate crystals, CsLiB 6 O 10 and Gd x Y 1-x Ca 4 O ( BO 3)3 have been developed by the present authors. CsLiB 6 O 10 is for fourth- and fifth-harmonic generations of Nd:YAG laser, Gd x Y 1-x Ca 4 O ( BO 3)3 for third-harmonic generation. This paper reviews the growth and nonlinear optical properties of these new borate crystals and the progress in UV light generation.

In this paper, we have studied the effect of impurity on the energy levels and nonlinear optical properties of a hexagon-shaped quantum wire using finite element method (FEM). We have obtained the energy eigenvalues, their corresponding eigenfunctions and third harmonic generation (THG) with and without impurity for different sizes of inner a1 and outer a2 hexagons. It is found that all energy levels are decreased with increasing a1. There is degeneracy between energy levels without impurity. But, there is no degeneracy between the energy levels in the presence of impurity. The dipole matrix elements are increased with enhancing hexagon sizes without impurity. But, these elements have complex behaviors with impurity. The THG increases and shifts toward lower energies by enhancing a1. The influence of a2/a1 on THG is not large when a2/a1 > 2. The THG shifts toward lower energies by increasing impurity position.
