ABSTRACTResults on the nonlinear properties of solutions of Buckminsterfullerene in toluene are reported. Optical limiting thresholds are as low as 15 mJ/cm2 with multiple pulse stability. Evidence for a different mechanism than that applicable in graphitic carbon black suspensions is presented. The calculated second hyperpolarizability agrees with experimentally reported values.

For practical application, optical limiting materials must exhibit a fast response and a low threshold in order to be used for the protection of the human eye and electro-optical sensors against intense light. Many nanomaterials have been found to exhibit optical limiting properties. Laser ablation offers the possibility of fabricating nanoparticles from a wide range of target materials. For practical use of these materials, their optical limiting performance, including optical limiting threshold and the ability to efficiently attenuate high intensity light, needs to be improved. In this paper, we fabricate nanoparticles of different metals by laser ablation in liquid. We study the optical nonlinear properties of the laser-generated nanoparticle dispersion. Silica microspheres are used to enhance the optical limiting performance of the nanoparticle dispersion. The change in the optical nonlinear properties of the laser-generated nanoparticle dispersion caused by silica microspheres is studied. It is found that the incident laser beam is locally focused by the microspheres, leading to an increased optical nonlinearity of the nanoparticle dispersion.

The nonlinear properties and optical limiting performance of Bromophenol indicator solution were investigated using continuous wave laser beam at 488 nm and 514 nm. A z-scan technique was used to measure the nonlinear refractive index. The optical limiting was investigated by monitoring the output transmission through the samples at different concentrations and at different pH values. The results show the dependence of the optical limiting threshold on concentration as well as on the pH values of the solution. The investigation shows that bromophenol blue is a potential candidate for optical limiting. Results also show that the optical limiting values can be used as a pH indicator.

Nowadays, the use of lasers has become commonplace in everyday life, and laser protection has become an important field of scientific investigation, as well as a security issue. In this context, optical limiters are receiving increasing attention. This work focuses on the identification of the significant parameters affecting optical limiting properties of aqueous suspensions of pristine single-wall carbon nanohorns. The study is carried out on the spectral range, spanning from ultraviolet to near-infrared (355, 532 and 1064 nm). Optical nonlinear properties are systematically investigated as a function of nanohorn morphology, concentration, dimensions of aggregates, sample preparation procedure, nanostructure oxidation and the presence and concentration of surfactants to identify the role of each parameter in the nonlinear optical behavior of colloids. The size and morphology of individual nanoparticles were identified to primarily determine optical limiting. A cluster size effect was also demonstrated, showing more effective optical limiting in larger aggregates. Most importantly, we describe an original approach to identify the dominant nonlinear mechanism. This method requires simple transmittance measurements and a fitting procedure. In our suspensions, nonlinearity was identified to be of electronic origin at a 532 nm wavelength, while at 355 nm, it was found in the generation of bubbles.

In this work, the photo-physical properties of seven different phthalocyanine derivatives are studied, with a focus on their transparency spectral range. Two compounds among them are recently synthesised. The investigations include synthesis, photoluminescence, absorptive and refractive nonlinear properties, and optical limiting performances. The compounds are found to be emitting interesting broad fluorescence bands in the visible range. The nonlinear optical properties are investigated with the help of Z-scan technique, with both a continuous laser at 488, 514.5 and 632.8 nm, and with a pulsed laser at 532 nm. The sign and the magnitude of the nonlinear refractive index, third-order susceptibility, and nonlinear absorption coefficient have been evaluated in the seven compounds. The optical limiting performance of each compound was also evaluated in the continuous and pulsed laser excitation regimes. Keywords:

Commercial polyimide films have shown to be homogeneous on a scale of 5 to 200 nm. The observation of Skybond (SKB) 705 and PI5878 was carried out by using a Philips 400, 120 KeV STEM. The objective was to elucidate the structural features of the polymeric samples. The specimens were spun and cured at stepped temperatures in an inert atmosphere and cooled slowly for eight hours. TEM micrographs showed heterogeneities (or nodular structures) generally on a scale of 100 nm for PI5878 and approximately 40 nm for SKB 705, present in large volume fractions of both specimens. See Figures 1 and 2. It is possible that the nodulus observed may be associated with surface effects and the structure of the polymers be regarded as random amorphous arrays. Diffraction patterns of the matrix and the nodular areas showed different amorphous ring patterns in both materials. The specimens were viewed in both bright and dark fields using a high resolution electron microscope which provided magnifications of 100,000X or more on the photographic plates if desired.
