<p>The objective of the work was to develop pure silica with high surface area from rice husk by chemical and heat treatment. The silica samples were characterized in terms of chemical composition, particle size distribution, morphology and surface area. The amount of silica was determined by a modified volumetric method. The trace impurities in silica were quantitatively determined by inductive coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). A 99% silica powder with surface area 282 m<sup>2</sup>/gm could be produced by chemical and heat treatment at 1000 ºC for 2 h.</p>

Iodine and methylene blue adsorption properties of the high surface area nanoporous carbon materials derived from agro-waste and rice husk is reported. Rice husk was pre-carbonized at 300 °C in air followed by leaching out the silica nanoparticles by extraction with sodium hydroxide solution. The silica-free rice husk char was mixed with chemical activating agents sodium hydroxide (NaOH), zinc chloride (ZnCl2), and potassium hydroxide (KOH) separately at a mixing ratio of 1:1 (wt%) and carbonized at 900 °C under a constant flow of nitrogen. The prepared carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformed-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), and Raman scattering. Due to the presence of bimodal micro- and mesopore structures, KOH activated samples showed high specific surface area ca. 2342 m2/g and large pore volume ca. 2.94 cm3/g. Oxygenated surface functional groups (hydroxyl, carbonyl, and carboxyl) were commonly observed in all of the samples and were essentially non-crystalline porous particle size of different sizes (<200 μm). Adsorption study revealed that KOH activated samples could be excellent material for the iodine and methylene blue adsorption from aqueous phase. Iodine and methylene blue number were ca. 1726 mg/g and 608 mg/g, respectively. The observed excellent iodine and methylene blue adsorption properties can be attributed to the well-developed micro- and mesopore structure in the carbon material. This study demonstrates that the agricultural waste, rice husk, and derived nanoporous carbon materials would be excellent adsorbent materials in water purifications.

In this research, the development of three (3) low-cost adsorbent materials from abundant waste rice husk was achieved via thermal treatment. The physiochemical properties of the developed adsorbents were evaluated. Their adsorption behaviours in batch system were evaluated for the removal of phenol from aqueous solutions by varying the pH (2 to 10). It was found that, the rice husk ash burned a 400oC for 1hr ‘RHA400,1’ has the highest surface area (201.36 m2.g-1) followed by RHA300,4(87.08 m2.g-1) and RHA600,1(43.22 m2.g-1), respectively. RHA400,1had shown the highest removal efficiency followed by RHA300,4and RHA600,1, towards phenol due to high surface area and porosity. The maximum uptake of phenol was found at pH 4. The adsorption kinetics was well described by both pseudo-second order and the Elovich models.

Activated carbons derived from rice husk pyrolysis (biochar) were prepared by chemical activation at different biochar/K2CO3 proportions in order to assess its capacity as adsorbent. The activated material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (DRX), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller (BET) method. The Barret, Joyner, and Halenda (BJH) method and functional density theory (DFT), presenting interesting texture properties, such as high surface area (BET 1850 m2 g-1) and microporosity, which allow its use as a sorbent phase in solid-phase extraction (SPE) of the main constituents of the aqueous pyrolysis phase. It was demonstrated that the activated carbon (RH-AC) adsorbs different compounds present in from rice husk pyrolysis wastewater through quantitative analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD), presenting good linearity (R2 > 0.996) at 280 nm.
