Absorbents used in closed and semi-closed circuit environments play a key role in preventing carbon dioxide poisoning. Here we present an analysis of one of the most common carbon dioxide absorbents—soda lime. In the first step, we analyzed the composition of fresh and used samples. For this purpose, volumetric and photometric analyses were introduced. Thermal properties and decomposition patterns were also studied using thermogravimetric and X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) analyses. We also investigated the kinetics of carbon dioxide absorption under conditions imitating a closed-circuit environment.

Metal-free synthesis of fully alternating polycarbonates from carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxides is highly desired but a huge challenge. Here, we disclose the combination of tertiary amines with trialkyl boranes for completely alternating copolymerization of CO2 with epoxides. Triethylamine (TEA) pairing with triethyl borane (TEB), the simplest catalyst for the copolymerization of CO2 and propylene oxide (PO), afforded fully alternating poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 54 h-1 at 60 oC. Remarkably, diamine such as, N,N,N',N'-tetraethylethylenediamine (TEED) and triamine such as N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylene triamine (PMDETA) pairing with TEB exhibited improved the copolymer selectivity of up to 99%. Supplementally, the effect of trialkylborane structure on the copolymerization were also investigated. Moreover, PPCs prepared from these tertiary amines/ trialkyl boranes Lewis pairs showed the head-to-tail diad content of around 80%. The number-average molecular weight of PPC was up to 56.0 kg/mol with narrow distribution (Đ =1.16) and could be easily adjusted by simply varying the feeding ratios. The 1H NMR spectra and MALDI-TOF-MS spectra suggest that both tertiary amine-activating CO2 and TEB-masked end anions cooperatively promote the fully alternating CO2/epoxide copolymerization. This work provides an organocatalytic platform for well-defined CO2/epoxide copolymers using simple small molecules with high atomic utilization.<br>

The computation of power cycles employing carbon dioxide as working fluid and extending down to the critical region requires the knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of CO2 within a wide range of pressures and temperatures. Available data are recognized to be insufficient or insufficiently accurate chiefly in the vicinity of the critical dome. Newly published density and specific heat measurements are employed to compute thermodynamic functions at temperatures between 0 and 50 deg C, where the need of better data is more urgent. Methods for the computation of thermal properties from density measurement in the low and in the high temperature range are presented and discussed. Results are reported of the computation of entropy and enthalpy of CO2 in the range 150–750 deg C and 40–600 atm. The probable precision of the tables is inferred from an error analysis based on the generation, by means of a computer program of a set of pseudoexperimental points which, treated as actual measurements, yield useful information about the accuracy of the calculation procedure.
