Abstract Every year, billions of animals leave their home range and start seasonal migrations in order to find more favorable resources and to escape harsh environmental conditions. These round trips often span thousands of kilometers. To successfully navigate along their route, animals rely on various external references. While landmarks and celestial cues like stars or the sun are easy to imagine as guidance on these journeys, using the geomagnetic field for orientation is more elusive. The geomagnetic field is an omnipresent cue, which can be sensed and relied upon by many animals, even when visual cues are sparse. How magnetic fields can be perceived seems to vary between birds and fish. While birds seem to use a mechanism based on the quantum mechanical properties of electron spins, fish may have evolved a compass similar in its function to the technical devises developed by humans. How these mechanisms work precisely and how they are integrated are research questions addressed in SFB 1372.

Nanotwinned (nt) metals exhibit superior electrical and mechanical properties compared to their coarse-grained and nano-grained counterparts. They have a unique microstructure with grains that contain layered nanoscale twins divided by coherent twin boundaries (TBs). Since nanotwinned metals have low electrical resistivity and high resistance to electromigration, they are ideal materials for making nanowires, interconnections and switches. In this paper we show the possibility of making nanotwinned copper interconnections on a non-conductive substrate using a novel additive manufacturing technique called L-PED. Through this approach, microscale interconnections can be directly printed on the substrate in environmental conditions and without post processing.

In recent years, studies regarding natural fiber reinforced composites have been increased as they are biodegradable with good mechanical performance therefore can help to overcome the environmental issue. As the natural fibers are easy to obtain, many industries have started to make use of natural fiber composites which are light in weight and possess good mechanical properties. However, the natural fiber composites also possess certain limitations most importantly their high moisture absorption ability which makes them incompatible at degradable environment. The fiber constituents of natural fiber composite may have different type of interactions at different environmental conditions. In addition, the involvement of nanoparticles in the composite may be the solution to overcome the deficiencies. In this research, the degradation behaviour of Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibers reinforced epoxy composites upon exposure to degradable environmental conditions and the effect of adding nanoparticles have been studied. The tensile tests were conducted before and after the exposure to different environmental conditions including plain water, moist soil, brine solution, and cooking oil. Results shows that the addition of 10wt% of OPEFB fiber to the epoxy composites had improved the mechanical tensile strength up to 15.97% and composites exposed to brine solution have the most prominent sign of degradation in mechanical properties in both composites with and without nanosilica. Nevertheless, the composites with nanosilica have shown up to 24.28% improvement in tensile strength after exposure to different environmental conditions. The improvement were attributed due to filling the voids of the composites with nanosilica and good interfacial adhesion between the nanofiller, fiber, and matrix.

Cellulose paper is used as base material for so-called electroactive papers (EAPap) actuator. EAPap is a complex anisotropic material, which has not been extensively characterized and additional basic testing is required before developing application devices from EAPap. Mechanical properties of EAPap were investigated in this work under different environmental conditions (humidity, temperature, and electrical field) and configurations. It shows viscoelastic effect and exhibits two distinct elastic and plastic modulus connected by a bifurcation point. Through tests, environment and configuration effects on EAPap are obtained to researchers and designers interested in the field of smart materials and EAP.

In the recent years the driving force for technological change in many respects has shifted towards the design and process of materials that offer a set of responses to external stimuli or environmental conditions. These materials are called “smart materials”. Such responses are designed to fulfil the range of scenarios to which a material or structure may be exposed providing them with a particular functionality. These materials are not only useful because of their structural, chemical, physical or mechanical properties; they can also perform an action within a process. It has been described that smart structures exhibit one or more of the following features; they can act as sensors or actuators within a structural material or bonded in the surface; or they have controllable capabilities that permit to respond to the stimuli according to a prescribed function. These materials become intelligent when they have the ability to respond intelligently and autonomously to changing conditions. There are lots of possibilities within the term functional “smart materials” but in all of them, the term is used to describe systems which respond to a stimulus in a useful and predictable manner. Nowadays it is widely known the useful capability of, piezoelectric, electro-optic, magnetic, electro-mechanic materials, etc…that respond to stimuli such as, electric or magnetic fields, stress, temperature, moisture or pH. These multifunctional character and capability of biomaterials makes them suitable for a big number of applications in every order of human activity, from photochromic lenses for sunglasses to military and aerospace uses. They are already a big part of the market in the engineering industry.
