In the present work, the friction and wear properties of Polypropylene (PP) based composites filled with Hydroxyapatite (HA) particles were studied. Fillers contents in the PP were 10, 20, and 30 wt%. The effects of hydroxyapatite ratio on the water absorption, friction and wear properties of the polymer composites is presented. The result showed that the addition of HA to the composite changed the water absorption, friction coefficient and wear rate.

ABSTRACT The global demand for wood as a building material is steadily growing, while the availability of this natural resource is diminishing. This situation has led to the development of alternative materials. Of the various synthetic materials that have been explored and advocated, polymer composites claim a major participation as building materials. There has been a growing interest in utilizing natural fibres as reinforcement in polymer composite for making low cost construction materials in recent years. Natural fibres are prospective reinforcing materials and their use until now has been more traditional than technical. They have long served many useful purposes but the application of the material technology for the utilization of natural fibres as reinforcement in polymer matrix took place in comparatively recent years. Economic and other related factors in many developing countries where natural fibres are abundant, demand that scientists and engineers apply appropriate technology to utilize these natural fibres as effectively and economically as possible to produce good quality fibre reinforced polymer composites for housing and other needs. Among the various natural fibres, sisal is of particular interest in that its composites have high impact strength besides having moderate tensile and flexural properties compared to other lignocellulosic fibres. The present paper surveys the research work published in the field of sisal fibre reinforced polymer composites with special reference to the structure and properties of sisal fibre, processing techniques, and the physical and mechanical properties of the composites.

Variety of application use fibre reinforced composites because of their intrinsic properties in mechanical strength, renewability and low production cost compared to conventional materials. Natural fibres are environmentally friendly their use will not break the budget when used as an alternative to the regular materials. Reinforcement used in polymer is either man-made or natural. Man-made synthetic, metallic, semi-synthetic, polymer fibres have superior specific strength but their high cost of production limits its application and feasibility to make composites. Recently there is a rise in use of natural fibres from various natural resources which are available abundantly. Composites based on natural fibres have their advantages of cost in making the fibres from different vegetables, wood, animals and minerals. In this work a thorough and systematic inquiry regarding better utilization of sisal fibre for making value-added products has been carried out. Various hybrid composite test specimens as per ASTM were prepared with natural fillers such as sisal-pineapple-Kenaf fibres by using hand layup method. The physical and mechanical characteristics of prepared hybrid composite with sisal fibre, pineapple fibre and kenaf fibre are the main objective the research. The various mechanical properties of the hybrid composites like tensile strength, rupture strength, impact strength, shear strength, hardness, and wear strength are studied by standard experiment methods. The experimental results were discussed. The experiments exposed that the use of sisal fibre when compared with similar fibres in a composite increase the most of the physical properties like tensile, rupture, wear properties of the material where as impact strength of the material is lowered. Surface morphology of the sisal fibre after tensile loading is studied microscopically.

Polymer-based composites have been widely used in the enhanced tribological technologies of various automobile, aerospace industry, sports, etc. The epoxy-based polymer composites reinforced with glass fiber have significantly improved the wear inhibitors and ultimate strength along with ultra-low density than other available materials. This current research aims to fabricate a variation of such non-woven viscose-based polymer composites for various weight fractions (100–400 GSM) with a constant fiber loading of 30 wt% and subsequently analyze its physical, mechanical, and tribological properties under various operating parameters. The density of the fabricated composite exhibits an increase of magnitude with an increase in weight fraction. The composites consist of 400 GSM fabric showing a higher tensile, impact, flexural strength, hardness, and inter lamina shear strength (ILSS). A pin-on-disc wear set-up held dry sliding wear tests of various nonwoven viscose fabric-based composites under various operating parameters like sliding velocity, sliding distance, area density, and normal load. A Taguchi-based L16 orthogonal array design was utilized to estimate the optimal behavior for maximum wear resistance for operating conditions. The result reveals that the normal load over the composite contributes the highest towards wear on a composite compared to area density, sliding velocity, and distance. The wear phenomena have been verified with SEM micrographs to characterize various wear phenomena like fiber rapture, ploughing, micro-cracks, and wear lines.

Objective: In this present work, the SiO2 nanoparticles as filler materials and ABS as a matrix material taken for the injection molding process to prepare the specimens, after that, to study the enhancement of mechanical properties and wear performance of composite materials. Method/Findings: SiO2 nano particles are added to Acrylonitrile Butadiene styrene(ABS) polymer composites at various weight fractions. It is also found that tensile strength, hardness, and wear properties improved in reinforcement. A pin-on-disc type friction and wear monitor (ASTM G99) was employed to evaluate wear behavior of ABS/SiO2 polymer composites. In this experimental study, the input process parameters such as load, sliding distance, and speed are considered and optimized for the composite materials’ properties. Tensile tests and wear tests were conducted to examine, and the properties of the material were studied. Morphology of the fractured material was studied using SEM analysis. The wear debris observed to explore the flacks and groves of the content during wear test for this study Orthogonal array (L9) and control parameters. Applications/Improvements : The significant contributions of this work are the decrease of ultimate strength with increasing content of SiO2 in the composites, and the sliding speed conversed to 45.51% of the wear rate variation. Mechanical and wear properties of ABS/SiO2 nanoparticles polymer composites were studied further. Keywords: ABS; SiO2 Nanoparticles; tensile; hardness; wear; SEM
