In the study, highly filled superconcentrates based on various grades of ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer (EVA) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) were studied. It is assumed that adding superconcentrates to various polyolefins will make them biodegradable in the environment. The influence of EVA rheological characteristics and the content of vinyl acetate (VA) groups on the properties of the superconcentrates were studied. It was shown that increasing the concentration of VA groups in EVA leads to an increase in the elongation at break of the composites; increase in EVA melt flow index (MFI) greatly reduces the basic mechanical properties of the composite.

Highly filled bio-composites based on ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) with cellulose and wood flour were prepared in the previous parts of the study. The aim of this work was to dilute them with a polyethylene (PE), to prepare new bio-composites with lower EVA content and to investigate the effect of EVA/PE ratio on the mechanical properties. It was shown that melt flow index (MFI) and elongation at break increased additively with an increase of EVA content in the composition, but yield strength had an inverse tendency. The obtained results are extremely useful for choosing the right composition for the industrial implementation.

AbstractChopped jute fiber (JF) surfaces were modified using alkaline, silane and eco-grade epoxy resin. Surface characteristics of jute fibers were confirmed by FTIR and EDX analyses. JF filled polyurethane elastomer (TPU) composites were prepared via extrusion process. The effect of surface modifications of JF on mechanical, thermo-mechanical, melt-flow, water uptake and morphological properties of TPU-based eco-composites were investigated by tensile and hardness tests, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), melt flow index (MFI) test, water absorption measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, respectively. Mechanical test results showed that silane and epoxy treated JF additions led to increase in tensile strength, modulus and hardness of TPU. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of TPU rose up to higher values after JF inclusions regardless of treatment type. Si-JF filled TPU exhibited the lowest water absorption among composites. Surface treated JFs displayed homogeneous dispersion into TPU and their surface were covered by TPU according to SEM micro-photographs.

Melt-blown generated PBT nonwoven fabrics usually have small fibril diameter, high flexibility, well heat and oil resistance. Therefore, they would have promising application such as vehicle filtering media. The rheological behavior of PBT with High Melt Flow Index for Melt-blown is investigated in this paper. It is a direction of the technology design and fabrication parameters .The relation of apparent viscosity and shear rate is analyzed, as well as flow activation energy and Non-Newtonian indexes. The results suggest that PBT with High Melt Flow Index is Non-Newtonian fluid. Apparent viscosity and flow activation energy show gradually decrease with increasing shear rate, exhibiting typical shear-thinning behavior.

In this article, 50/70 penetration grade TUPRAS bitumen was modified. Reactive elastomeric terpolymer (Elvaloy RET; DuPont Company), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) polymers were used in bitumen modification. Set hours of the tests were applied to samples taken from the obtained modified bitumen mixture. Varying amount of reactive ethylene terpolymer with weight ratios of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5% were introduced to the mixture of raw bitumen with 1.0% SBS and 1.0% EVA. Penetration, penetration index, softening point, ductility and elastic recovery tests were performed with these modified bitumen and raw bitumen. The samples of raw bitumen and modified bitumens of 2.0% Elvaloy RET, 1.0% SBS and 1.0% EVA were investigated by means of IR spectroscopy. The raw bitumen was modified with SBS, EVA and RET, and it was determined that penetration and ductility values were decreased while penetration index, softening point and elastic recovery were increased. The purpose of this study is to research the improving properties of 50/70 penetration grade–modified bitumen used in highways of Turkey. The most important characteristics (such as softening point, penetration and % elastic recovery) of new polymer-modified bitumen (NPMB) containing 2.5% EVA, 1% RET and 1% SBS were compared with eight different types of polymer-modified bitumens in Turkey (TPMB). NPMB provided all required parameters (softening point, penetration and % elastic recovery) for five different types of TPMBs (TPMB 70-16, TPMB 70-22, TPMB 76-16, TPMB 76-22 and TPMB 82-16).

The failures of the flexible pavements are not only caused by harsh climatic conditions prevailing in most of the tropical countries but also due to increase in traffic. The ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) modification of the bitumen can strengthen the properties of binders and also improve the quality of bitumen used for pavements construction. This paper reports the changes in physical and rheological properties of unaged 80-100 grade bitumen modified with different percentages of EVA and compared with the properties of PG 76 binder. The penetration, softening point and viscosity properties were studied. The rheological properties were measured using dynamic shear rheometer and the test was performed at temperatures ranging from 46 to 76 ⁰C at intervals of 6 ⁰C. It was noted that, after modification, the properties of binders had improved. The results show that 5% EVA content by weight in modified binder is adequate in terms of physical and rheological properties studied. In addition, the properties of 5% EVA modified 80-100 grade bitumen are similar to PG 76 binder.

In this experimental study, a composite of poly-ether-ketone-ketone by reinforcement of hydroxyapatite and chitosan has been prepared for possible applications as orthopaedic scaffolds. Initially, different weight percentages of hydroxyapatite and chitosan were reinforced in the poly-ether-ketone-ketone matrix and tested for melt flow index in order to check the flowability of different compositions/proportions. Suitable compositions revealed by the melt flow index test were then taken forward for the extrusion of filament required for fused deposition modelling. For thermomechanical investigations, Taguchi-based design of experiments has been used with input variables in the extrusion process as follows: temperature, load applied and different composition/proportions. The specimens in the form of feedstock filament produced by the extrusion process were made to undergo tensile testing. The specimens were also inspected by differential scanning calorimetry and photomicrographs. Finally, the specimen showing the best performance from the thermomechanical viewpoint has been selected to extrude the filament for the fused deposition modelling process.
