Cliff-dwelling plant species are highly specialized and adapted to a vulnerable, fragmented, and are mostly endemic, narrowly-distributed and threatened. As a contribution to the conservation efforts of endemic cliff-dwelling species, this study provides an overview of the effects of habitat loss on the abundance and distribution of Pachyphytum caesium (Crassulaceae) due to human disturbances. To achieve this objective, we first conducted a retrospective analysis from 2003–2013 to assess the effects of land use change on the abundance of P. caesium. Secondly, we estimate the abundance and distribution of P. caesium throughout the study area, as well as analyze the effect of rock-climbing activities on the density and population structure of P. caesium. The results suggest differences in population abundance among sites is due to the adverse effects of habitat loss. P. caesium presents a very restricted distribution with small and fragmented populations. In addition, guava agriculture has a significant impact on the chemical soil properties of the hillsides, causing a significant effect on the occurrence of P. caesium, while sport activities remove both the soil and the plants from the cliffs. According to the results, P. caesium is classified as a plant species with extremely small populations (PSESP), and it is highly vulnerable to habitat disturbance. Its conservation is thus a priority to ensure its permanence.

Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) technique was used to investigate the abundance and distribution of rare earth elements (REE) in soil around Kaduna Refinery. The aim of the study is to assess the rare elements potential of Nigeria for economic exploitation. Five REEs (La, Dy, Eu, Yb, and Lu) were detected in varying concentrations ranging from a minimum of 0.6 µg/g (Lu) to a maximum of 249.0 µg/g (La). The elements existed with trends consistent with the natural pattern of REEs in soil, showing significant Eu and Dy anomalies which characterize upper plains and flood plains. The levels of REEs in soil in the study area were generally slightly above background levels, with minimal (La, Dy, and Eu), moderate (Yb), and significant (Lu) enrichments and trending: Lu ˃Yb ˃ Eu ˃ Dy ˃ La. The abundance of the REEs investigated cannot establish a potential of Nigeria for economic exploitation of the mineral, hence, rare earth project in the study area is not viable at the moment.

The Research have done started from February to June 2013, have purpose to compare the population abudance and difference of morphometric Telescopium telescopium in two different observation places. The sampling point determined by method of random sampling. The sample has taken by plot measurement 10x10 m and the sub plot measurement 1x1 m placed in 5 pieces plot measurement 10x10 m.The research result got 62 individual Telescopium telescopium in research location with the density value 0.155 (ind/m²) at 1st location and 297 individual Telescopium telescopium with the density value 0.7425 (ind/m²) at 2nd location. The average measurement result (length and dimeter) morphometric of Telescopium telescopium found at mangrove habitat in Sungai Bongkok was length 8.94 cm and diameter 4.73 cm. The morphometric average measurement result (length and diameter) Telescopium telescopium found at mangrove habitat around the garbage disposal Punggur was length 4.66 cm and diameter 2.54 cm. Keywords: Population Abundance; Morphometric; Telescopium telescopium.
