Cough is one of the most common causes of seeking the primary medical care, especially during the autumn and the spring. This article is a review of literature  aimed at differential diagnosis of possible causes of acute cough in children and  adults. Given a vast majority of diseases associated with cough, differential diagnosis  have to consider several issues. The key issue is cough duration and possible  anatomical location of the pathological changes. An algorithm of differential diagnosis  of acute cough in children and adults and description of most common diseases  associated with acute cough are given in the review. Further diagnostic work-up  should be driven by the duration of cough as soon as the acute cough could be first  manifestation of a chronic disease.

Pelvic entrapment neuropathies represent a group of chronic pain syndromes that significantly impede the quality of life. Peripheral nerve entrapment occurs at specific anatomic locations. There are several causes of pelvic entrapment neuropathies, such as intrinsic nerve abnormality or inflammation with scarring of surrounding tissues, and surgical interventions in the abdomen, pelvis and the lower limbs. Entrapment neuropathies in the pelvic region are not widely recognized, and still tend to be underdiagnosed due to numerous differential diagnoses with overlapping symptoms. However, it is important that entrapment neuropathies are correctly diagnosed, as they can be successfully treated. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, ischiadic nerve, genitofemoral nerve, pudendal nerve, ilioinguinal nerve and obturator nerve are the nerves most frequently causing entrapment neuropathies in the pelvic region. Understanding the anatomy as well as nerve motor and sensory functions is essential in recognizing and locating nerve entrapment. The cornerstone of the diagnostic work-up is careful physical examination. Different imaging modalities play an important role in the diagnostic process. Ultrasound is a key modality in the diagnostic work-up of pelvic entraptment neuropathies, and its use has become increasingly widespread in therapeutic procedures. In the article, the authors describe the background of pelvic entrapment neuropathies with special focus on ultrasound-guided injections.

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a common complication to acute tonsillitis. The treatment is drainage of the abscess, but many needle aspirations are unsuccessful due to a low diagnostic accuracy based on oral examination only. In this article, we describe how intraoral ultrasound can be added to improve the diagnostic work-up of PTA and present a novel technique for ultrasound-guided aspiration of PTA, using a small pencil-shaped transducer. We present our first clinical experiences with this technique and describe how it could be integrated in a clinical setting to guide safe and successful needle aspirations of PTA.

Objective: To present a case series of urethro-cavernosal fistulas evaluating their diagnostic work-up and management. Methods: A literature search was performed using key words including “urethro-cavernosal fistula,” “urethral fistula,” and “cavernosal fistula.” Results: In total 10 case reports were identified and reviewed for information regarding clinical diagnosis, management, and long-term outcomes including success rates and complications. Conclusion: Urethro-cavernosal fistula is a rare urological condition. With few cases reported to date, there is considerable variation in diagnostic work-up and management. Both conservative and surgical approaches can be utilized in the management of urethro-cavernosal fistulas with good long-term outcomes. Level of evidence: Not applicable for this multicentre audit.

The artery of Percheron (AOP) is a rare arterial variant of the thalamic blood supply. Due to the densely packed collection of nuclei it supplies, an infarction of the AOP can be devastating. Here we highlight a patient who had an AOP stroke in the community, which was initially managed as cardiac arrest. AOP strokes most often present with vague symptoms such as reduced conscious level, cognitive changes and confusion without obvious focal neurology, and therefore are often missed at the initial clinical assessment. This case highlights the importance of recognising an AOP stroke as a cause of otherwise unexplained altered consciousness level and the use of MRI early in the diagnostic work-up.
