Abstract. We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to infer thermal properties of soil organic matter (SOM) in the static fertilization experiment in Bad Lauchstädt, Germany, which has been established in 1902. Four treatments (null N, change from null to manuring in 1978 NM, change from manuring to null in 1978 MN, and permanent manure and mineral fertilization since 1902 M) were sampled in 2004. Soil organic carbon contents were highest for M (2.4%), lowest for N (1.7%), and similar for MN and NM (2.2%). DSC thermograms were characterized by three peaks at around 354, 430, and 520°C, which were assigned to as thermally labile and stable SOM and combustion residues from lignite, respectively. DSC peak temperatures were relatively constant among treatments, but peak heights normalized to the organic C content of the soil were significantly different for labile and stable SOM. Labile C was higher for M>MN=NM=N, and stable C decreased in the order N=NM>MN=M, showing that agricultural depletion of SOM increases the share of thermally stable C. Lignite-derived C was not affected by management, suggesting a homogeneous deposition across treatments.

<p>The aim of the study has been to define the stocks and the basic properties of soil organic matter in agricultural-used soil sequence located in the former shoreline of disappearing lakes. The study area is located in the catchment of the Sumowskie Lakes, the Brodnica Lake District, North-Eastern Poland. The investigations involved preparation of five soil pits located in the south-western part of the former Sumowskie Lake bottom and on the southern slope of the adjacent kame hill. The greatest soil transformation is reflected in the quality and quantity of the soil organic matter. Indexes of organic matter quality and TOC stocks are significantly changing along the studied transect. The strongly humidified organic matter is found in mursh horizons. Gyttja layers above the groundwater level have a medium humification index. Horizons saturated with water are very low humidified. TOC stocks drop along the analysed soil sequence from the biogenic plain to the top of the kame hill.</p><p> </p><p>Celem badań było określenie zasobów i podstawowych właściwości materii organicznej sekwencji rolniczo użytkowanych gleb dawnej strefy brzegowej zanikających jezior. Obszar badań był zlokalizowany w zlewni jezior Sumowskich na Pojezierzu Brodnickim w Polsce północno-wschodniej. Analizowano transekt składający się z pięciu profili glebowych znajdujących się w pd.-zach. części dawnego Jeziora Sumowskiego. Obejmował on dno dawnego jeziora oraz przylegające wzgórze kemowe. Największe zróżnicowanie gleb dotyczyło ilości i jakości glebowej materii organicznej. Zarówno właściwości materii organicznej, jak i jej zasoby wyraźnie różnicują się w analizowanym transekcie. Materia organiczna poziomów murszowych gleb pojeziornych odznacza się najwyższym stopniem humifikacji, warstwy gytii, powyżej poziomu wód gruntowych, pośrednim, a poziomy nasycone wodą najniższym spośród analizowanych. Zasoby węgla organicznego zmniejszają się wzdłuż transektu od gleb pojeziornych do szczytu pagórka kemowego (pararędziny).</p>

The changes of soil organic matter (SOM) humification induced by long-term combination of tillage and olive mill wastewater (OMW) application compared to natural and cultivated soil have been little investigated. This study aimed to compare effects of no cultivation with natural vegetation soil (NC), tillage (CT1) for 80 years and combination of tillage with OMW application (CT2) for 20 years on SOM humification degree. Fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-visible ratios (E4/E6 and CHA/CFA) were used to study soil humic acids (HAs). The SOM and humification distribution was determined for the whole field area using the Inverse Distance Weighting method. Results showed that SOM content, fluorescence emission area and E4/E6 and CHA/CFA ratios were higher in NC. Tillage reduced SOM amount, molecular size, aromatic condensation and humification degree as shown by the strong correlation between fluorescence area and CHA/CFA ratio in CT1 conversely to E4/E6. Contradictory results between fluorescence emission area and E4/E6 ratio found in NC and CT1 indicated that E4/E6 ratio was not a reliable indicator of SOM humification degree. The SOM amount, CHA/CFA ratio and emission fluorescence area increased conversely to E4/E6 ratio in CT2. This revealed a greatly humified organic matter and aromatic structure condensation with tillage and OMW application. Spatial distribution showed a progressive increase of SOM and CHA/CFA from north-west to south-east linked to the positive relationship between CHA/CFA ratio and SOM amount independent of soil management practices. Soil amended with OMW provided a favourable environment for the development of HAs which improved soil quality. The UV-visible ratio CHA/CFA with fluorescence emission area can be used as parameters to investigate SOM humification degree.
