Abstract. InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) analysis is an effective technique to map 3-dimensional surface deformation with high spatial resolution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capability of InSAR analysis when applied to ground monitoring of an environmental disaster. We performed a time series InSAR analysis using ENVISAT/ASAR and ALOS/PALSAR data and commercial software to investigate subsidence around the Kanto District of Japan. We also investigated techniques for efficient early detection of landslides in Kyushu using time series analysis that incorporated synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. ENVISAT/ASAR data acquired from 2003–2010 and ALOS/PALSAR data acquired from 2006–2011 were used to detect poorly expressed geomorphological deformation by conducting time series analyses of periodically acquired SAR data. In addition, to remove noise caused by geographical feature stripes or phase retardation, we applied median filtering, histogram extraction processing, and clarification of the displacement with a Laplacian filter. The main functions of the InSAR time series analysis are the calculation of phase differences between two images and the inversion with smoothness constraint for the estimation of deformation along the line of sight. The results enabled us to establish criteria for the selection of suitable InSAR data pairs, and provided the final error estimation of the derived surface deformation. The results of the analysis in the Kanto District suggested that localized areas of uplift and subsidence have occurred at irregular intervals in this area. Furthermore, the method offers the possibility of early warning of environmental disasters such as landslide and abrupt subsidence. Our results confirm the effectiveness of InSAR analysis for the monitoring of ground deformation over wide areas via the detection of localized subsidence and landslides.

In the diverse applications of polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems, it is a crucial to conduct polarimetric calibration, which aims to remove the radar system distortion effects prior to utilizing polarimetric SAR observations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of different polarimetric calibration methods. Two widely used methods, the Van Zyl and Quegan methods, and one recently proposed method, such as the Villa method, have been selected among various calibration methods in literature. The selected methods have basic differences in their assumptions that are applied to the polarimetric system model. In order to evaluate the calibration performances under different system parameters and ground characteristics, comparative analysis of the calibration results were conducted on synthetic polarimetric SAR data and ALOS PALSAR quad-pol mode data. Based on the experimental results, the advantages and limitations of different methods were clarified, and a simple hybrid calibration method is presented to further improve the polarimetric calibration performance.

In this paper, multifrequency synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from ALOS/PALSAR, ENVISAT/ASAR and Cosmo-SkyMed sensors were studied for forest classification in a test area in Central Italy (San Rossore), where detailed in-situ measurements were available. A preliminary discrimination of the main land cover classes and forest types was carried out by exploiting the synergy among L-, C- and X-bands and different polarizations. SAR data were preliminarily inspected to assess the capabilities of discriminating forest from non-forest and separating broadleaf from coniferous forests. The temporal average backscattering coefficient ( σ ¯ °) was computed for each sensor-polarization pair and labeled on a pixel basis according to the reference map. Several classification methods based on the machine learning framework were applied and validated considering different features, in order to highlight the contribution of bands and polarizations, as well as to assess the classifiers’ performance. The experimental results indicate that the different surface types are best identified by using all bands, followed by joint L- and X-bands. In the former case, the best overall average accuracy (83.1%) is achieved by random forest classification. Finally, the classification maps on class edges are discussed to highlight the misclassification errors.

Penginderaan jauh kini memainkan peranan penting dalam pengamatan perilaku gunung api. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengamati deformasi permukaan Gunung Bromo, yang terletak di Jawa bagian Timur, Indonesia, yang masuk dalam rangkaian sistem volkanik di Taman Nasional Bukit Tengger Semeru (TNBTS). Penggunaan algoritma SAR Interferometry (InSAR) yang disebut sebagai pendekatan Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) memungkinkan perancangan peta kecepatan deformasi rata-rata dan and peta time series displacement di wilayah kajian. Teknik SBAS yang biasa menghasilkan rangkaian observasi tahap interferometrik. Ini tercatat sebagai kombinasi linear dari nilai fase SAR  scene untuk setiap pixel secara tersendiri. Analisis yang dilakukan terutama berdasarkan 22 data SAR data yang diperoleh melalui sensor ALOS/PALSAR selama kurun waktu 2007–2011. Beberapa penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan analisis InSAR dalam menyelidiki siklus gunung api, terutama Gunung Bromo yang memiliki karakteristik erupsi stratovolcano dalam satu hingga lima tahun. Analisis hasil memperlihatkan adanya kemajuan dari kajian sebelumnya akan InSAR wilayah tersebut, yang lebih fokus  kepada deformasi yang berpengaruh kepada kaldera. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa penelitian ini bisa diimplementasikan pada manajemen risiko atau manajemen infrastruktur
