This article presents an experimental and modelling work which uses a compact domestic hot water heat pump (DHW-HP) that is simultaneously powered from photovoltaic panels (PV) and from the grid. Results from more than 240 days of experimental works have been used in order to develop and to validate the computer model of the system. The program, implemented in MATLAB, is computationally ‘light’ enough to allow mid-term simulations yet also detailed enough to accurately and coherently portray stratification within thermal storage tanks. Finally, as an example of the model capabilities, it has been used to simulate a domestic hot water tapping cycle from the European Standard EN 16147.

The article compares two means for domestic hot water production (DHW) for a detached house that is using gas boiler with a closed combustion chamber and air source heat pump water heater (ASHPWH). An analysis of domestic hot water production using an air source heat pump was made taking into account coefficient of performance listed according to the new BS EN 16147 standard. The analysis of outlay related to the investment and operating costs was also performed. Ultimately, the more profitable choice for domestic hot water production was made.

Integration of a three-media refrigerant/phase change material (PCM)/water heat exchanger (RPW-HEX) in the hot superheated section of a heat pump (HP) system is a promising approach to save energy for domestic hot water (DHW) generation in multi-family houses. The RPW-HEX works as a desuperheater and as a latent thermal energy storage in the system. The latent thermal energy storage is charged during heating and cooling operation and discharged for DHW production. For this purpose, the water side of the RPW-HEX is connected to decentralized DHW storage devices. DHW consumption, building standards and climate, energy prices, material costs, and production costs are the constraints for the selection of the optimal storage size and RPW-HEX design. This contribution presents the techno-economic analysis of the RPW-HEX integrated into an R32 air source HP. With the aid of experimentally validated dynamic computer models, the optimal sizing of the RPW-HEX storage is discussed to maximize energy savings and to minimize the investment costs. The results are discussed in the context of a return of investment analysis, practical implementation aspects and energetic potential of the novel technology.

The achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, related to energy and resource use, is a critical issue for small and insulated communities. In many minor islands, solar energy is not correctly exploited, and electrical heaters are connected to weak grids with very a high share of generation by fossil fuels. As a consequence, there is the necessity to assess the potential and the suitability of diffusion of alternative systems to avoid dependency on the electrical grid and reduce carbon emissions. This paper aims to evaluate the technical and economic performances of some alternative systems exploiting renewable energy for domestic hot water production. Four different systems were simulated and studied: a heat pump connected to the grid, a heat pump coupled with a photovoltaic plant, a heat pump combined with a solar thermal collector, and a solar thermal plant. Moreover, heat and electricity storages were studied for reducing impacts on the distribution network. The work presents data gathered for a study on energy-retrofit strategies on Lampedusa Island (Italy, 35°30′56″ north (N), 568 degree-days). Finally, to select the most cost-effective plant, an economic analysis of the chosen systems was carried out. This analysis shows that the best net present values are associated with the heat pump (HP) coupled with a stand-alone PV system and a small battery and solar thermal-assisted HP. The shortest payback time was calculated for the solar thermal system.
