The traditional research approaches common in different disciplines of social sciences centered around one half of the social realm: the actors. The other half are the relations established by these actors and forming the basis of “social.” The social structure shaped by these relations, the position of the actor within this structure, and the impact of this position on the actor are mostly excluded by the traditional research methods. In this chapter, the authors introduce social network analysis and how it complements the other methods.

Connectedness in the classroom is something that has often been mentioned in researches, but it is difficult to imagine what it is specifically. One may wonder whether or not connectedness is related to students’ academic performance. With the use of Social Network Analysis, this article models and measures the connectedness among classmates and its association with their academic performance. The class under study is at the undergraduate level and the research results show that its members have fairly high adhesion and no significant dispersion. Combined with the calculation of Pearson's index (r) in SPSS, the article has arrived at findings which prove to be identical with those of many international studies: the connectedness and the centrality of a student do not correlate with his or her academic performance. The findings of this article not only provide suggestions for classroom organization and extracurricular activities but also reveal new research directions in the field of education in Vietnam via network thinking.

This review of social network analysis focuses on identifying recent trends in interpersonal social networks research in organizations, and generating new research directions, with an emphasis on conceptual foundations. It is organized around two broad social network topics: structural holes and brokerage and the nature of ties. New research directions include adding affect, behavior, and cognition to the traditional structural analysis of social networks, adopting an alter-centric perspective including a relational approach to ego and alters, moving beyond the triad in structural hole and brokerage research to consider alters as brokers, expanding the nature of ties to include negative, multiplex/dissonant, and dormant ties, and exploring the value of redundant ties. The challenge is to answer the question “What's next in social network analysis?” Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior, Volume 9 is January 2022. Please see http://www.annualreviews.org/page/journal/pubdates for revised estimates.
