Abstract Jet formation in decaying two-dimensional turbulence on a rotating sphere is reviewed from the viewpoint of Rossby waves. A series of calculations are performed to confirm the behavior of zonal mean flow generation on the parameter space of the rotation rate Ω and Froude number Fr. When the flow is nondivergent and Ω is large, intense easterly circumpolar jets tend to emerge in addition to the appearance of a banded structure of zonal mean flows with alternating flow directions. When the system allows surface elevation, circumpolar jets disappear and an equatorial easterly jet emerges with increasing Fr. The appearance of the intense easterly jets can be understood by the angular-momentum transport associated with the generation, propagation, and absorption of Rossby waves. When the flow is nondivergent, long Rossby waves tend to be absorbed near the poles. In contrast, when Fr is large, Rossby waves can hardly propagate poleward and tend to be absorbed near the equator.

Abstract A series of numerical experiments on two-dimensional decaying turbulence is performed for a barotropic fluid on a rotating sphere. Numerical calculations have confirmed two important asymptotic features: emergence of the banded structure of zonal flows and their extreme latitudinal inhomogeneities in which kinetic energy is accumulated into the easterly circumpolar jets. The banded structure of zonal flows is established relatively early on in the initial stage. Later, after extended periods of time integration, only the circumpolar jets are intensified gradually, while there is no further evolution in the banded structure in the low and midlatitudes. Wave activity flux analysis illustrates that the initial vortices in the low and midlatitudes propagate poleward as Rossby waves and converge to produce easterly circumpolar flows. In association with this convergence, accumulation of the mean zonal component of kinetic energy proceeds. The tendency for the accumulation becomes strong as the rotation rate is increased, and nearly all of the kinetic energy is concentrated to the circumpolar flows in cases of rapid rotation. A theoretical model is constructed under the assumption that a circumpolar jet emerges around the latitude where the local Rhines scale is equal to the distance from the Pole, and that initial vortices at the lower latitudes contribute to the generation of the jets. The model describes the mean zonal component of kinetic energy and the averaged speed and width of the circumpolar jets as functions of the rotation rate, which agree satisfactorily with the numerical results.

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) in two-dimensional homogeneous isotropic turbulence is performed by using the Spectral method at a Reynolds number Re = 1000 on a uniformly distributed grid points. The Reynolds number is low enough that the computational grid is capable of resolving all the possible turbulent scales. The statistical properties in the computed flow field show a good agreement with the qualitative behavior of decaying turbulence. The behavior of the flow structures in the computed flow field also follow the classical idea of the fluid flow in turbulence. The p.d.f. of the velocity gradients in two-dimensional decaying isotropic turbulence is shown to approach a Cauchy distribution, with algebraic s−2 tails, as the flow becomes dominated by a large number of compact coherent vortices. The statistical argument is independent of the vortex structure, and depends only on general scaling properties. The same argument predicts a Gaussian p.d.f. for the velocity components. The convergence to these limits as a function of the number of vortices is analysed. It is found to be fast in the former case, but slow (logarithmic) in the latter, resulting in residual u−3 tails in all practical cases. The influence of a spread Gaussian vorticity distribution in the cores is estimated, and the relevant dimensionless parameter is identified as the area fraction covered by the cores. A comparison is made with the result of numerical simulations of two-dimensional decaying turbulence. The agreement of the p.d.f.s is excellent in the case of the gradients, and adequate in the case of the velocities. In the latter case the ratio between energy and enstrophy is computed, and agrees with the simulations. All the one-point statistics considered in this paper are consistent with a random arrangement of the vortex cores, with no evidence of energy screening.

High-resolution simulations of forced quasi-geostrophic (QG) turbulence reveal that Charney isotropy develops under a wide range of conditions, and constitutes a preferred state also in β-plane and freely decaying turbulence. There is a clear analogy between two-dimensional and QG turbulence, with a direct enstrophy cascade that is governed by the prediction of Kraichnan (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 47, 1971, p. 525) and an inverse energy cascade following the classic k−5/3 scaling. Furthermore, we find that Charney's prediction of equipartition between the potential and kinetic energy in each of the two horizontal velocity components is approximately fulfilled in the inertial ranges.
