Information from foreign literary sources regarding microcystins of blue-green algae is presented. The current state of the problem of reservoirs «blooming» and the significance of this phenomenon for humans are reflected. The research was carried out in two stages: laboratory and full-scale. A pure culture of Phytophthora infestans was isolated, on which further studies were carried out. Isolation of isolates was carried out on agar nutrient medium. Potassium permanganate and ethanol were selected from the available antiseptics. Field experiments were carried out on experimental lines of Solanum lycopersicum by diagnosing signs of late blight disease. The determination of the potential negative effect of tomato plants treated with a suspension of cyanobacteria was carried out by the method of biotesting using Achatina fulica as a test object. The effect of blue-green algae toxins – microcystins – on colonies Ph. infestans in vitro is described. Photometric observation of the decrease in the number of colonies with a time interval of three days is presented. The phytophtorostatic effect of microcystins has been established. Degradation of Ph. infestans the next day were fixed after treatment of the colony with a suspension of cyanobacteria. An inhibitory effect was revealed, almost to the complete disappearance of symptoms in plants partially affected by late blight and grown in vivo. It has been determined that plants treated with microcystin can be considered safe for further consumption; the death of model organisms has not been registered.

It is of crucial importance to evaluate the safety profile of the ingredients used in dermatological emulsions. A suitable equilibrium between safety and efficacy is a pivotal concern before the marketing of a dermatological product. The aim was to assess the safety and biological effects of a new cold processed silicone-based emulsion (SilEmulsion). The hazard, exposure, and dose-response assessment were used to characterize the risk for each ingredient. EpiSkin assay and human repeat insult patch tests were performed to compare the theoretical safety assessment toin vitroandin vivodata. The efficacy of the SilEmulsion was studied using biophysical measurements in human volunteers during 21 days. According to the safety assessment of the ingredients, 1,5-pentanediol was an ingredient of special concern since its margin of safety was below the threshold of 100 (36.53). EpiSkin assay showed that the tissue viability after the application of the SilEmulsion was 92 ± 6% and, thus considered nonirritant to the skin. The human studies confirmed that the SilEmulsion was not a skin irritant and did not induce any sensitization on the volunteers, being safe for human use. Moreover, biological effects demonstrated that the SilEmulsion increased both the skin hydration and skin surface lipids.

2-Methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin produced by blue-green algae were successfully removed in a new gravel filter plant. Small amounts of sludge were sampled from the filter layer and the bacteria able to decompose MIB were isolated from the sludge samples. By-products of the MIB degradation by these bacteria were also investigated. Among these bacteria, efforts were mainly focused on Pseudomonas fluorescens. The components of cell free extracts of this bacterium were studied in order to verify the biological reactions in vitro. 2-Methylenebornane, 2-methyl-2-bornene and isomers of these compounds were found to be a part of the by-products of the MIB degradation in the gravel filter.

Abstract Nostoc commune Vauch is a nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae, contains a large number of active molecules with medicinal functions. Our previous study found that a water stress protein (WSP1) from Nostoc commune Vauch and its the recombinant protein (Re-WSP1) exhibited significant anti-colon cancer (CRC) activity both in vitro and in vivo. However, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In this study, the CCK8 and clonogenic assays showed that Re-WSP1 restrained the colon cancer growth in a dose-dependent manner. Mechanistically, Re-WSP1 inhibited the expression of β-catenin, which was partly reversed by LiCl treatment, demonstrating a key role in Re-WSP1-induced inhibition of cell growth. Quantitative PCR analysis showed that the expression of microRNA-539 (miR-539) was significantly up-regulated upon Re-WSP1 treatment. Moreover, miR-539 negatively regulateed the expression of β-catenin through directly binds to the 3’UTR of β-catenin mRNA. Taken together, our data demonstrate that Re-WSP1 suppresses the CRC growth via miR-539/β-catenin axis, which provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying Re-WSP1 against CRC.
