The Impact

The reinforced concrete structure of a port wharf is affected by steel corrosion and ship docking impact. Replacing an ordinary steel bar with a stainless steel bar can solve the corrosion problem of the steel bar while ensuring the bearing capacity of the structure. However, the research on impact resistance of stainless steel-reinforced concrete structure is not perfect. In this paper, impact mechanical properties of reinforced concrete beams before and after equal strength replacement of stainless steel bars are analyzed by theoretical analysis and drop hammer impact test, and the possibility and applicable scope of equal strength replacement of stainless steel bars are put forward. The results indicated the following: (1) when the reinforcement ratios were small (0.21% to 1.32%), the stainless steel-reinforced concrete beams with equal strength were able to effectively reduce the stiffness losses of the beams undergoing impact loads, as well as improve the elastic resilience abilities, and reduce the structural damages. Therefore, the corrosion and impact problems of reinforcements could be solved by replacing ordinary reinforcements with stainless steel reinforcements and (2) when the reinforcement ratios were large (1.32% to 2.57%), the shear failures of the stainless steel-reinforced concrete beams were observed to be relatively serious, and the impact resistance performances had worsened. The research results provide technical support for the engineering application of stainless steel-reinforced concrete structure design.

In the present study, based on the previous impact resistance test study results regarding stainless steel reinforced concrete beams, six steel fiber stainless-steel reinforced concrete (SFSRC) beams were subjected to drop-hammer impact tests using an advanced ultra-high heavy multi-function drop hammer impact test system. The goal was to further investigate the mechanical properties of SFSRC beams under impact load conditions. The influencing effects of the steel fiber content and impact velocity levels on the impact resistance mechanical properties of SFSRC beams were analyzed. A digital image correlation method (DIC) was used to analyze the full-field strain and displacement values of the specimens. The results revealed that the steel fibers had significantly enhanced the overall energy dissipation and crack resistance capacities of the specimens, and also improved the brittleness of the stainless steel reinforced concrete beams. In addition, the addition of steel fibers effectively inhibited the local damages of the beam-hammer contact areas. In this study’s experiments, the impact resistance of the beams was observed to be the highest when the fiber content was 2.0%. The internal force formula of the local response stage of the beams showed that the shearing effects had significant impacts on the overall failure modes of the specimens. It was found that with the increases in impact velocity, the failure mode of the SFSRC beams transitioned from bending failure to shear failure, and then to a punching shear failure mode. The DIC results indicated that the addition of steel fiber improved the bonding performances between the concrete matrixes, along with inhibiting the crack development rates through the bond force between the fiber and the concrete.

Theoretical Results

In order to improve the bearing capacity of SRC which is related with deformation and stiffiness, SRC beams should be strengthened by CFRP. Based on the experiment of six pre-splitting steel reinforced concrete beams strengthened with (Prestressed) CFRP sheets, the deformation of beams are discussed. Load-deformation curves are obtained by the experiment. Considering the influence of intial bending moment on SRC beams, the calculated deformation formulas of SRC beams strengthened by (Prestressed) CFRP are deduced. The results showed that the load-deformation curves of normal and strengthened beams respectively showed three and two linear characteristics. The theoretical results which calculated by the formulas of deformation are well agreement with the experimental results.

This study presents a design method for hybrid fiber-reinforced-polymer-steel-reinforced concrete beams by an optimized analysis of the cross section. First, the relationships among the energy consumption, the bearing capacity, and the reinforcement ratio are analyzed; then, the parameters of the cross section are determined. Comparisons between the available theoretical and experimental results show that the designed hybrid fiber-reinforced-polymer-steel-reinforced concrete beams with a low area ratio between the fiber-reinforced polymer and the steel reinforcement could meet the required carrying capacity and exhibited high ductility.
