In this paper, an attempt has been made to extend application of the recently proposed Flexural constitutive model to short-term deformational analysis of flexural prestressed concrete members. The relationship of tensile concrete is based on smeared crack approach and accumulates cracking and the tension stiffening effects. The Flexural constitutive model was applied in a simple engineering technique based on principles of strength of materials and the layered approach. To assess accuracy of the technique, deflections have been calculated for experimental prestressed concrete beams reported in the literature. Comparison has been earned out with the predictions of the well-known design code methods of different countries.

When glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar splices are used in reinforced concrete sections, they affect the structural performance in two different ways: through the stress concentration in the section, and through the configuration of the GFRP–concrete bond. This study experimentally investigated a new method for increasing the bond strength of a GFRP lap (two GFRP bars connected together) using a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheet coated in epoxy resin. A new splicing method was investigated to quantify the effect of the bar surface bond on the development length, with reinforced concrete beams cast with laps in the concrete reinforcing bars at a known bending span length. Specimens were tested in four-point flexure tests to assess the strength capacity and failure mode. The results were summarised and compared within a standard lap made according to the ACI 318 specifications. The new method for splicing was more efficient for GFRP splice laps than the standard lap method. It could also be used for head-to-head reinforcement bar splices with the appropriate CFRP lapping sheets.

Nonlinear analysis of structural members is vital to understand the behavior and the response of reinforced concrete members. Even though most design procedures concentrate on the ultimate stage of response towards the end of the post-yielding zone as the decisive design criterion, the structural members usually function at the service load levels within the post-cracking zone. Therefore, cracking is a critical aspect of concrete behavior that affects the overall response of reinforced concrete beams. The initiation and the propagation of the cracks are affected directly by the tension and shear stresses in the beam. In flexural beams, the tensile stresses dominate the crack onset and its growth. Cracks in reinforced concrete flexural beams leave non-cracked regions in between the cracked sections. In order to apply a consistent analysis strategy, the smeared crack approach averages the behavior of these different cracked sections and uncracked in between regions to generate an accurate global response of the entire beam. This study presents a numerical constitutive tensile model that captures the complete tensile response of the reinforced concrete flexural member, in terms of averaged/smeared crack response. As a second step, this model was examined against a large pool of experimental data to validate its accuracy. Overall, the main objective of this study is to develop a representative constitutive tensile model for reinforced concrete flexural members and validate its accuracy against experimental results. The full nonlinear sectional response is analytically realized, based on the assumed trilinear moment–curvature response and the assumed trilinear moment–extreme fiber compressive strain response. This is considered as the secondary outcome of the present study.

Abstract The paper presents some of the results from a large experimental program undertaken at the Department of Civil Engineering of Damascus University. The project aims to study the ability to reinforce and strengthen the concrete by bars from Epoxy polymer reinforced with glass fibers (GFRP) and compared with reinforce concrete by steel bars in terms of mechanical properties. Five diameters of GFRP bars, and steel bars (4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm) tested on tensile strength tests. The test shown that GFRP bars need tensile strength more than steel bars. The concrete beams measuring (15cm wide × 15cm deep × and 70cm long) reinforced by GFRP with 0.5 vol.% ratio, then the concrete beams reinforced by steel with 0.89 vol.% ratio. The concrete beams tested on deflection test. The test shown that beams which reinforced by GFRP has higher deflection resistance, than beams which reinforced by steel. Which give more advantage to reinforced concrete by GFRP.

Microstructural fracture behavior of a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) with nonuniformly distributed fibers is studied in the presentation. A comprehensive numerical analysis package to study the effect of nonuniform fiber dimensions and locations on the microstructural fracture behavior is developed. The package starts with an optimization algorithm for generating representative volume element (RVE) models that are statistically equivalent to experimental measurements. Experimentally measured statistical data are used as constraints while the optimization algorithm is running. Virtual springs are utilized between any adjacent fibers to nonuniformly distribute the coated fibers in the RVE model. The virtual spring with the optimization algorithm can efficiently generate multiple RVEs that are statistically identical to each other. Smeared crack approach (SCA) is implemented to consider the fracture behavior of the CMC material in a mesh-objective manner. The RVEs are subjected to tension as well as the shear loading conditions. SCA is capable of predicting different fracture patterns, uniquely defined by not only the fiber arrangement but also the specific loading type. In addition, global stress-strain curves show that the microstructural fracture behavior of the RVEs is highly dependent on the fiber distributions.
