Reinforced concrete beams are widely used in various civil structures such as residential, industrial, and commercial buildings. The use of RC beams reduces the cost of the construction and the time of execution. Rockfalls, accidental events, explosions, projectile, missile or aircraft impacts, terrorist attacks and ice impacts are the typical examples of sudden loads. Experimental studies can be impractical and require expensive devices to observe crack pattern and failure due to impact loading. Similar results can be obtained through non-linear finite elements analysis. In this study, RC beam is modelled and analyzed for changing impact velocity. Beam properties like clear cover is varied to access the damage in beams.

Effects of partial replacements of sand by waste fine crumb rubber on the performance of reinforced concrete under low velocity impact loading were investigated. Specimens were prepared for 5%, 10% and 20 % replacements by volume of sand. All specimens were cured in moist air for 90 days. For each case, six beams of 100 mm ×100 mm × 500mm were subjected to 5.15 kg hammer from 900mm height. The number of blows of the hammer required to induce the first visible crack of the beam were recorded. The results are presented in terms of impact energy required for the first crack. The fine crumb rubbers increased the impact energy for first crack.

This study investigates the behaviors of simply supported reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to impact loads. A numerical model of RC beams has been calibrated and a total of 18 RC beams with varying longitudinal reinforcement, transverse shear reinforcement, span and effective depth are investigated, subjected to different input impact energy. It is found that inertia force plays an important role in resisting an impact load at the starting time. The slenderness of the beam can cause increased downward reaction force and also amplifies the upward reaction force. Based on the numerical results, recommendations are made for designing RC beams under low velocity impact load. A formula is derived to predict the maximum mid-span deflection under low velocity impact load with respect to the kinetic energy and static bending capacity. The maximum spacing and the diameter of stirrups are also recommended so as to avoid the brittle failure under impact load.

Reinforced concrete (RC) slabs may be subjected to low-velocity impact effect in their service lives. In this study, it is aimed to investigate dynamic responses of two-way rc slabs. So, a total of 6 slabs with 500x500, 550x550 and 600x600 mm side lengths and having same thickness are both experimentally and numerically investigated under low velocity impact loading. Two different reinforcement configurations are used in the production of each slab. A drop test setup is designed for the experimental study. Besides, measurement devices such as accelerometer, lvdt, dynamic load cell, data logger and optic photocells are used in the experimental program. Experiments on the specimens are carried out for the same level of impact energy. Acceleration, displacement and impact load values of slabs are presented by time dependent graphs. In addition, cracks and deformations are observed during tests. In the numerical part of this study, a detailed finite element procedure where explicit dynamic analysis is performed by Abaqus finite elements software is established. The simulations are performed for each test specimen under impact effect and analysis results are used in the verification of experimental results. The relationship between experimental and numerical studies is comparatively examined in terms of crack patterns and average ratios of accelerations, displacements, impact loads. Finally, it is considered that the proposed numerical model could be used in the evaluation of experimental results under impact loading.

This paper presents an experimental program of reinforced concrete beam without stirrups tested by impact three-point-bending under different initial velocity (drop height). As the results shown, for the static events, the failure mode is bending firstly, and then translates to shearing. the longitudinal reinforcements play an important role for the increasing of loading during bending stage. For the impact events, reinforced concrete beams failed in a flexural failure model at slow rates of loading and in shear failure model at high impact loading rate relatively. Moreover, the shear failure and bending failure have developed during the peak stage of Force-deflection curves. That is different with the emergence sequence of cracks under static tests. So the mechanical parameters of peak stage should be considered for the resistance of concrete beam under impact loading.
