The out-of-plane behaviour of concrete masonry infills bounded by reinforced concrete frames

AbstractThis study analytically investigated the behavior of reinforced concrete frames with masonry infills. For the analysis, VecTor2, a nonlinear finite element analysis program that implements the Modified Compression Field Theory and Disturbed Stress Field Model, was used. To account for the slip behavior at the mortar joints in the masonry element, the hyperbolic Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion, defined as a function of cohesion and friction angle, was used. The analysis results showed that the lateral resistance and failure mode of the infilled frames were significantly affected by the thickness of the masonry infill, cohesion on the mortar joint–brick interface, and poor mortar filling (or gap) on the masonry boundary under the beam. Diagonal strut actions developed along two or three load paths on the mortar infill, including the backstay actions near the tension column and push-down actions near the compression columns. Such backstay and push-down actions increased the axial and shear forces of columns, and ultimately affect the strength, ductility, and failure mode of the infilled frames.

A numerical study using a three-dimensional finite element model was conducted to investigate the arching behaviour and strength of concrete masonry infills bounded by reinforced concrete frames subjected to out-of-plane loading. Physical specimens were concurrently tested to provide results for validation of the model as well as evidence of directional characteristics of arching behaviour of masonry infills. A subsequent parametric study using the model included a wide range of infilled frame geometric properties. The results showed in detail the difference in one-way and two-way arching in terms of both strength and failure mechanism, and the contributing factors to this difference. Evaluation of the two main design equations for out-of-plane strength of masonry infills led to proposal of modifications to provide a more rational consideration of directional behaviour of concrete masonry infills. A comparison study using the available test results showed a marked improvement of strength prediction based on the proposed modification.

The behaviour of reinforced concrete frames with masonry wall infills is influenced a lot by the stiffness and strength difference between the frame and the infill, causing early detrimental damage to the infill or to the critical concrete columns. The paper reports the results from shake table seismic tests on a full-scale reinforced concrete (RC) frame building with modified hollow clay block (orthoblock brick) infill walls, within INMASPOL SERA Horizon 2020 project. The building received innovative resilient protection using Polyurethane Flexible Joints (PUFJs) made of polyurethane resin (PU), applied at the frame-infill interface in different schemes. Further, PUs were used for bonding of glass fibre grids to the weak masonry substrate to form Fibre Reinforced Polyurethanes (FRPUs) as an emergency repair intervention. The test results showed enhancement in the in-plane and out-of-plane infill performance under seismic excitations. The results confirmed remarkable delay of significant infill damages at very high RC frame inter-story drifts as a consequence of the use of PUFJs. Further, the PUFJ protection enabled the resilient repair of the infill even after very high inter-story drift of the structure up to 3.7%. The applied glass FRPU system efficiently protected the damaged infills against collapse under out-of-plane excitation while they restored large part of their in-plane stiffness.
