ABSTRACTAn innovative approach for in-situ characterization has been used in this work to investigate the composition, growth mode, morphology and crystalline ordering of the early stages of growth of GaN films grown on sapphire by MOCVD for substrate temperatures in the range of 450°C to 1050°C. We have performed in-situ characterization by Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS), Ion Channeling, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Low Energy Electron Diffraction. Ex-situ the films have been characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and thickness profilometry. The films have been grown in an in-house designed and build MOCVD reactor that is attached by UHV lines to the analysis facilities. RBS analysis indicated that the films have the correct stoichiometry, have variable thickness and for low substrate temperature completely cover the substrate while for temperatures 850°C and higher islands are formed that may cover as few as 5 percent of the substrate. From Ion Channeling and LEED we have determined the crystallographic phase to be wurtzite. The crystalline quality increases with higher deposition temperature and with thickness. The films are epitaxialy grown with the <0001> crystallographic axis and planes of the GaN films aligned with the sapphire within 0.2 degrees.

The objective of this work was to characterize the populations of Gossypium barbadense in the states of Amapá and Pará, Brazil. In situ characterization was conducted through interviews with the owners of the plants and environmental observations. Leaf or petal tissue as well as seed samples were collected for genetic characterization by single sequence repeats markers and for storage in germplasm banks, respectively. The plants were maintained in dooryards and used mainly for medical purposes. The genetic analysis showed no heterozygous plants at the loci tested (f = 1), indicating that reproduction occurs mainly through selfing. The total genetic diversity was high (He = 0.39); and a high level of differentiation was observed between cotton plants from the two states (F ST = 0.36). Conventional methods of in situ maintenance of G. barbadense populations are not applicable. The conservation of the genetic variability of populations present in the two states could be achieved through germplasm collection and establishing of ex situ seed banks.

Morphological characters of above ground plant parts can be used to distinguishsweet potato accessions. The objective of this study was to get a number of diversity of sweet potato accessions based on above ground part morphology and to determine the accuracy of in situ characterization. This study used a survey method in five villages in two sub-districts, namely Inomosol and Huamual Muka, Western Ceram District. The first stage of this study involved in situ characterization, and the second stage involved planting and ex situ morphological characterization of 2-month-old plants which was used sweet potato descriptors. Data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The results showed that there were 25 accessions of sweet potato found in Huamual Muka and Inomosol Sub-districts, as distinguished by leaf shape and color, leaf patterns and leaf lobe number, petiole and stem colors, and vine twisting tendency. Verification results of the above ground morphology showed accuracy of ≥80% in 3 phenotypes in leaf lobe pattern, shape of central leaf lobe, linear middle leaves, leaves with 1, 5 and 7 lobes, green abaxial leaf veins, 2 petiole color phenotypes, purplish red stem, and stem additional colors. Meanwhile, the accuracy of characterization of other phenotypes was 0-76%.

AbstractIn situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization techniques provide valuable information on structure–property correlations to understand the behavior of materials at the nanoscale. However, understanding nanoscale structures and their interaction with the electron beam is pivotal for the reliable interpretation of in situ/ex situ TEM studies. Here, we report that oxides commonly used in nanoelectronic applications, such as transistor gate oxides or memristive devices, are prone to electron beam induced damage that causes small structural changes even under very low dose conditions, eventually changing their electrical properties as examined via in situ measurements. In this work, silicon, titanium, and niobium oxide thin films are used for in situ TEM electrical characterization studies. The electron beam induced reduction of the oxides turns these insulators into conductors. The conductivity change is reversible by exposure to air, supporting the idea of electron beam reduction of oxides as primary damage mechanism. Through these measurements we propose a limit for the critical dose to be considered for in situ scanning electron microscopy and TEM characterization studies.

ABSTRACTFilms of AIN were grown on Si under vacuum pressure at 900°C and examined ex situ with infrared reflectance spectroscopy and microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. Collection of IR emission spectra for in situ characterization was successful and used to identify growth parameters during film growth.
