Abstract Damage monitoring in pipes and pressure vessels are important to ensure safety and reliability of these structures. Structural damage monitoring based on an actuator-sensor system is a promising technology to obtain real-time information for structural condition. Since piezoelectric materials in electromechanical systems can detect mechanical responses such stress and deformation as a sensor or perform a defined work as an actuator, piezoelectric actuators/sensors are extensively used in damage detection. In the design of piezoelectric actuators and sensors, it is important to know the properties of the piezoelectric material, in particular, piezoelectric constants to predict its actuation/sensing performance. In this study we determine a piezoelectric constant of ZnO using molecular dynamics simulations. We introduced a shell degree of freedom to the core-only atomic potential to enable polarization of the ion caused by an electric field. This modeling technique allowed for accurate piezoelectric response of the molecular structure.

ASME B&PV Code, Section VIII “Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels” do not have requirements for baseline examination by vessel manufacturers. However many Owners require baseline data to establish as-built conditions of pressure vessels. Capturing baseline data at the manufacturing stage in a manner suitable for the Owner’s operations can preclude the need for post installation or preservice examination. Baseline NDE data can be easily referenced and compared to inservice inspection results to determine if any specific damage mechanisms manifest during operation and subsequently develop into damages to the vessel. Baseline NDE data can also provide guidance on inspection scheduling and damage monitoring. Therefore baseline examination in manufacturing phase is important to post-construction inspection and evaluation activities. This paper discusses baseline NDE considerations based on pressure vessel service conditions and damage mechanisms. It presents a systematic approach to acquire baseline NDE data in Manufacturers’ shops, including Owner’s role, Manufacturer’s responsibilities and design considerations to allow NDE access to all welds. Topics include examination location reference systems and baseline NDE methods, techniques, and tools that facilitate comparison to inservice examination. This paper also provides an example on implementing baseline NDE of a typical pressure vessel.

Ultra high voltage STEM has many inherent technical advantages over CTEM. These advantages include better signal detectability and signal processing capability. It is hoped that it will explore some new applications which were previously not possible. Conventional STEM (including CTEM with STEM attachment), however, has been unable to provide these inherent advantages due to insufficient performance and engineering problems. Recently we have developed a new 1250 kV STEM and completed installation at Nagoya University in Japan. It has been designed to break through conventional engineering limitations and bring about theoretical advantage in practical applications.In the design of this instrument, we exercised maximum care in providing a stable electron probe. A high voltage generator and an accelerator are housed in two separate pressure vessels and they are connected with a high voltage resistor cable.(Fig. 1) This design minimized induction generated from the high voltage generator, which is a high frequency Cockcroft-Walton type, being transmitted to the electron probe.
