The paper aims at introducing an analysis of thin-walled functionally graded sandwich beams for general non-uniform quadrilateral cross-sections. Generally, the materials are assumed to be graded through the thickness following a predefined shape while Poisson's ratio kept as a constant due to its less domination. The cross-section linearly varies from one end to another end of the beam. In order to relax the difficulties in modeling as well as capturing the behaviors of thin-walled functionally graded beams, a higher-order approach has been applied including warping, coupling distortions as well as Poisson's distortion. A multi-separated beam on each edge of the cross-section which is an application of the so-called beam-frame-modal method is adopted. Subsequently, the effects of these major importance along with anisotropy of materials are then fully considered. As a consequence, the analysis is able to extensively applied to closed-section beam-shells with different curvatures. In order to illustrate the accuracy and computational efficiency of the method, various examples have been conducted in which the results obtained from finite element package as ABAQUS are employed. This paper presents a vibration analysis of sandwich beams with functionally-graded skins containing edge cracks. Finite Element models of FGM sandwich beams are created with different depths and locations of the edge-cracks, and the first four natural frequencies of the beam are obtained for each crack configuration. The integrity of the data is validated for the FGM skins in comparison to a previously published reference. Finally, an inspection is conducted on the data to show the influences of the location and depth of cracks and material properties on the flexural vibration characteristics of cracked FGM sandwich beams.

This paper presents a detailed treatment of the formulation of static, bucking and vibration analysis of non-prismatic thin-walled composite spatial members of generic section. The theory is limited to small strains, moderate deflections and small rotations. The torsional shear strain on the middle surface of the beam wall is zero for an open contour while it corresponds to constant shear flow for a closed contour. Rigorous expressions for strains based on membrane theory of shells are obtained through which the effect of nonlinear tapering is considered. Solutions for classical buckling and vibration analysis by the finite element method are discussed. Numerical integration by using Gaussian quadrature on the cross-sections for the computation of sectorial properties and stress resultants and over the length for the computation of flexural, geometric and mass matrices is suggested. Some examples are solved and critical bucking loads, natural frequencies and the corresponding buckled and mode shapes are obtained by the Jacobi iteration procedure.
