AbstractFor a spatially periodic convection-diffusion problem, we analyze a time stepping method based on Lie splitting of a spatially semidiscrete finite element solution on time steps of length k, using the backward Euler method for the diffusion part and a stabilized explicit forward Euler approximation on {m\geq 1} intervals of length {k/m} for the convection part. This complements earlier work on time splitting of the problem in a finite difference context.

The initial boundary-value problem associated to a semilinear wave equation with time-dependent boundary values was approximated by using the method of lines. Time integration is achieved by means of an explicit time method obtained from an arbitrarily high-order splitting scheme. We propose a technique to incorporate the boundary values that is more accurate than the one obtained in the standard way, which is clearly seen in the numerical experiments. We prove the consistency and convergence, with the same order of the splitting method, of the full discretization carried out with this technique. Although we performed mathematical analysis under the hypothesis that the source term was Lipschitz-continuous, numerical experiments show that this technique works in more general cases.

AbstractIn this work, we develop a mixed-mode phase-field fracture model employing a parallel-adaptive quasi-monolithic framework. In nature, failure of rocks and rock-like materials is usually accompanied by the propagation of mixed-mode fractures. To address this aspect, some recent studies have incorporated mixed-mode fracture propagation criteria to classical phase-field fracture models, and new energy splitting methods were proposed to split the total crack driving energy into mode-I and mode-II parts. As extension in this work, a splitting method for masonry-like materials is modified and incorporated into the mixed-mode phase-field fracture model. A robust, accurate and efficient parallel-adaptive quasi-monolithic framework serves as basis for the implementation of our new model. Three numerical tests are carried out, and the results of the new model are compared to those of existing models, demonstrating the numerical robustness and physical soundness of the new model. In total, six models are computationally analyzed and compared.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the ability of some 2D and 3D numerical models to simulate flood waves in the presence of an isolated building or building array in an inundated area. Firstly, the proposed 2D numerical model was based on the finite-volume method (FVM) to solve 2D shallow-water equations (2D-SWEs) on structured mesh. The flux-difference splitting method (FDS) was utilized to obtain an exact mass balance while the Roe scheme was invoked to approximate Riemann problems. Secondly, the 3D commercially available CFD software package was selected, which contained a Flow 3D model with two turbulent models: Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANs) with a renormalized group (RNG) and a large-eddy simulation (LES). The numerical results of an impact force on an obstruction due to a dam-break flow showed that a 3D solution was much better than a 2D one. By comparing the 3D numerical force results of an impact force acting on building arrays with the existence experimental data, the influence of velocity-induced force on a dynamic force was quantified by a function of the Froude number and the water depth of the incident wave. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of the initial water stage and dam-break width on the 3D-computed results of the peak value of force intensity.

AbstractWe analyze a second-order in space, first-order in time accurate finite difference method for a spatially periodic convection-diffusion problem. This method is a time stepping method based on the first-order Lie splitting of the spatially semidiscrete solution. In each time step, on an interval of length k, of this solution, the method uses the backward Euler method for the diffusion part, and then applies a stabilized explicit forward Euler approximation on {m\geq 1} intervals of length {\frac{k}{m}} for the convection part. With h the mesh width in space, this results in an error bound of the form {C_{0}h^{2}+C_{m}k} for appropriately smooth solutions, where {C_{m}\leq C^{\prime}+\frac{C^{\prime\prime}}{m}}. This work complements the earlier study [V. Thomée and A. S. Vasudeva Murthy, An explicit-implicit splitting method for a convection-diffusion problem, Comput. Methods Appl. Math. 19 2019, 2, 283–293] based on the second-order Strang splitting.
