Clay-based polymer nanocomposites have attracted considerable interest in recent years because of the intermarriage between organic and clay components at nanoscale measurement offers prospect of new and enhanced properties. Resulting nanomaterials are of practical importance in applications that require exceptional mechanical properties, remarkable thermal stability, and good barrier properties. This review paper highlights the benefits we can derive from the preparation of these nanomaterials.

Concerns about environmental waste problems caused by non-biodegradable petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials as well as consumer demand for high-quality food products have led to increased interest in the development of biodegradable packaging materials using annually renewable natural biopolymers. Inherent shortcomings of natural polymer-based packaging materials such as low mechanical properties and low barrier properties can be recovered by applying nanocomposite technology. Polymer nanocomposites, especially natural biopolymer-layered silicate nanocomposites, exhibit markedly improved packaging properties due to large nanoparticle surface area and their significant aspect ratios. Additionally, natural biopolymer is susceptible to microorganisms, resulting in good biodegradability, which is one of the most promising aspects of its incorporation in packaging materials and industries. The present review article explains the various categories of nanoclay and bio-based polymer-based composites with particular regard to their application as packaging materials. It also gives an overview of the most recent advances and emerging new aspects of nanotechnology for development of composites for environmentally compatible food packaging materials.

The automotive industry is one major sector that consume material such as plastic at the advanced technological level. Hence, automotive plastics are now gaining attention due to the desire for light weight and low CO2 emission from vehicles. It is therefore anticipated that polymer nanocomposites will significantly enhance the performance of current technologies for car industries due to their excellent mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrical and barrier properties and their influence on fire retardancy. Hence, with the use of polymer nanocomposites, the encouraging outcomes in different sectors of automotive industry has resulted to new horizons in terms of advanced polymer nanocomposites for automobile applications. This chapter reviews advance polymer composites for automobile applications. Methods of fabricating polymer nanocomposites and several applications of polymer nanocomposites in automotive industries are discussed.
