Conductive Nanocomposites

Electrically conductive nanocomposites polymer of poly(vinyl alcohol)/PVA, glutaraldehyde (GA) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) has been successfully synthesized. The polymer nanocomposites were prepared by mixing PVA, GA (crosslinker), and MWCNT dispersion with an aid of ultrasonic homogenizer at 50 °C. The content of MWCNT, in particular, was varied in order to determine the effect of MWCNT on electrical conductivity of polymer composites. The polymer mixture was casted into a disc to obtain thin film. The electrical conductivity, surface morphology, and mechanical properties of the composites film were investigated by means of four probes method, FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, SEM, AFM, and tensile strength measurement, respectively. It was found that the optimum composition of PVA (10%): GA (1%): MWCNT (1%) was 20:20:3 in volume ratio. The addition of MWCNT induced the electrically conductive network on polymer matrix where the electrical conductivity of nanocomposites film significantly increased up to 8.28 x 10-2 S/sq due to reduction of the contact resistance between conductive filler. Additionally, the mechanical strength of nanocomposites polymer were significantly increased as a result of MWCNT addition. Modification of morphological structure of composite film as indicated by FTIR spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns, SEM, and AFM images verified the effective MWCNT filler network in the polymer matrix.

A Zn/Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) hosting carbon nanotubes (80% of CNTs) was synthesized and dispersed into a commercial biodegradable highly amorphous vinyl alcohol polymer at different loading (i.e., 1; 3; 5; 10 wt %). In order to improve the degree of dispersion of the filler into the polymer matrix, an ionic liquid (IL) based on 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethyl-5-sodiosulfoisophthalate was added to the composites’ mixtures. Structural characterization of filler and polymeric composites was carried out. The analysis of thermal, mechanical and electrical properties of the composites, resulted improved compared to the unfilled material, allowed to hypothesize a good dispersion of the LDH-CNTs lamellar filler into the polymer matrix-assisted by the ionic liquid. This was demonstrated comparing electrical conductivity of composite at 5% of LDH-CNTs in the presence and in the absence of IL. The experimental results showed that the electrical conductivity of the sample with IL is four orders of magnitude higher than the one without IL. Furthermore, the percolation threshold of the whole system resulted very low—0.26% of LDH-CNTs loading, which is 0.21% of CNTs.

This paper considers the problem of creating a conductive matrix with a framework made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for cell and tissue engineering. In silico investigation of the electrical conductivity of the framework formed by T-junctions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) (12, 12) with a diameter of 1.5 nm has been carried out. A numerical evaluation of the contact resistance and electrical conductivity of seamless and suture T-junctions of SWCNTs is given. The effect of the type of structural defects in the contact area of the tubes on the contact resistance of the T-junction of SWCNTs was revealed. A coarse-grained model of a branched SWCNT network with different structure densities is constructed and its electrical conductivity is calculated. A new layered bioconstruction is proposed, the layers of which are formed by natural polymer matrixes: CNT-collagen, CNT-albumin and CNT-chitosan. The energy stability of the layered natural polymer matrix has been analyzed, and the adhesion of various layers to each other has been calculated. Based on the obtained results, a new approach has been developed in the formation of 3D electrically conductive bioengineering structures for the restoration of cell activity.

The rapid development of modern technology requires new materials with predetermined properties. There is a need for materials with ultra-high strength, hardness, other characteristics and a common combination of these properties. The work was aimed at solving the problem of creating polymer composite materials that combine high physical and mechanical characteristics and thermal and electrical conductivity. Information was given on fillers, the use of which gives polymers thermal and electrical properties. Shown are the most commonly used in the composition of polymer composites fillers, advantages and disadvantages of each of the fillers. It was established that the use of carbon nanotubes allows obtaining polymer composites with the required performance characteristics. One of the problems when using nanoparticles as modifiers of reactive oligomers is their uniform distribution in the volume of the polymer matrix. Heterogeneity and uneven distribution of the dispersed phase can lead to dangerous defects in the material, so the technology of combining the nanofillers and the polymer matrix plays an important role. The possibility of obtaining polyvinyl butyral structured with carbon nanotubes in the process of its synthesis in the presence of carbon nanotubes was shown and the technological conditions of In situ synthesis are developed. Experimental samples of polyvinyl butyral structured with carbon nanotubes with high thermal and electrically conductive characteristics were obtained. Under optimal conditions of synthesis, in the obtained PVB samples structured with carbon nanotubes, the electrical conductivity of the composite increases by five orders of magnitude due to the high electrical conductivity of CNTs. For the obtained PVB, structured with carbon nanotubes, the fracture stress was significantly (by 62 %) increased, and the fracture deformation is reduced by approximately 38 %. The decrease in the deformation of the fracture during compression indicates an increase in the fragility of the polymer with the inclusion of CNTs. The prospects for the synthesis of polyvinyl butyral in the presence of carbon nanotubes to obtain a composite with a high level of achieved electrical and thermal conductivity were shown.

Properties Of Composites

In this study various composites based on the commercial ethylene vinyl acetate polymer matrix and multiwalled carbon nanotubes were prepared by casting from solution in the form of thick films. The degree of dispergation of carbon nanotubes in the polymer matrix was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of those composites were investigated. It was observed that the electrical conductivity of composites increases with an increase of multiwalled carbon nanotubes content. The mechanical properties of composites were only slightly changed when compared with properties of neat ethylene vinyl acetate matrix.

The Impact

The main aim of this work was the investigation of the possibility of replacing the heavy metallic meshes applied onto the composite structure in airplanes for lightning strike protection with a thin film of Tuball single-wall carbon nanotubes in the form of ultra-light, conductive paper. The Tuball paper studied contained 75 wt% or 90 wt% of carbon nanotubes and was applied on the top of carbon fibre reinforced polymer before fabrication of flat panels. First, the electrical conductivity, impact resistance and thermo-mechanical properties of modified laminates were measured and compared with the reference values. Then, flat panels with selected Tuball paper, expanded copper foil and reference panels were fabricated for lightning strike tests. The effectiveness of lightning strike protection was evaluated by using the ultrasonic phased-array technique. It was found that the introduction of Tuball paper on the laminates surface improved both the surface and the volume electrical conductivity by 8800% and 300%, respectively. The impact resistance was tested in two directions, perpendicular and parallel to the carbon fibres, and the values increased by 9.8% and 44%, respectively. The dynamic thermo-mechanical analysis showed higher stiffness and a slight increase in glass transition temperature of the modified laminates. Ultrasonic investigation after lightning strike tests showed that the effectiveness of Tuball paper is comparable to expanded copper foil.
