A study on corrosion evaluation by using ultrasonic waves and acoustic emission technique is presented. The experimental equipment was established to improve the corrosion process of carbon steel pipe. The carbon steel pipe was under 473K temperatures and 10Mpa pressure conditions, and ultrasonic wave and acoustic emission techniques were used to inspect the degree of corrosion after a certain period of time. Ultrasonic bulk waves are limited by the poor time resolution when used in the measurement of corrosion depth in thin wall structures because the corroded surfaces cause unclear echo signal edges. Therefore, in this study, the ultrasonic guided waves were generated on the pipe because the thickness of pipe was thin. Various wave modes were subsequently generated on the pipe to evaluate the implications of corrosion thinning on group velocity, transmission and reflection amplitudes. The amplitudes of the transmitted and the reflected waves are influenced by couplent material. In order to reduce the effect of coupling acoustic emission sensor was used. Acoustic emission technique has lots of parameters to evaluate the corrosion besides amplitude parameter. Among parameters energy, count, and frequency were useful parameters to measure the degree of corrosion inside the carbon steel pipe under 473K temperatures.

To detect the delamination, disbond,inclusion defects of the glass fiber composite materials applied in the solid rocket motor, active infrared thermographic non-destructive testing(NDT) is researched. The samples including known defects are heated by pulsed high energy flash lamp. The surface temperature of the samples is monitored by infrared thermography camera. The results of the experiments show that the active infrared thermography technique is a fast and effective inspection method for detecting the defects of delamination, disbond,inclusion of the composites. The samples are also detected by underwater ultrasonic c-scans. The paper concludes that the active infrared thermography NDT is more suitable to rapidly detect the defect in large-area and the underwater ultrasonic c-scans is more suitable to quantitatively identify the defect in local-area.

Abstract Steel structures with bolted joints are easily dismantled and repurposed. However, maintaining joint integrity is a challenge. This paper reports a non-destructive methodology to monitor steel bolted joints. Piezoelectric ceramic patches have been surface bonded in the joint for transmission and reception of guided ultrasonic waves. Both single and multiple bolted joints have been investigated. It has been demonstrated that the variation in acoustic impedance due at the bolt interface can be discerned and calibrated with bolt torque level. The recorded reflections from interfaces are used as inputs for a newly developed imaging algorithm. The proposed method has the potential to be a reference-free and fully automated method.

A new non-destructive pipe inspection method, ultrasonic guided wave method as well as the comparison between ultrasonics and guided waves is introduced. An investigation of the guided ultrasonic waves traveling along pipes with fluid loading on the inside and outside of the pipe is described. The effect of inner and outer media has been researched by considering a steel pipe with air and water inside and outside the experimental pipe. Site experiment was carried out on a heating pipe in the resident area of Bohai Oil Company, China. A typical cylindrical guided wave, longitudinal guided wave was used to examine pipes with artificial defects and its propagation characteristics along the pipe were studied. Good agreement has been obtained between the experiments and predictions for pipes with different loading on the pipe.
