ABSTRACTThe photodegradation of polypropylene (PP)/ZnO composites at different concentrations was evaluated under solar simulated exposure of respective nanocomposite films. Nanocomposites were prepared by solid mixing using a cryogenic mill, and then films were prepared by compression molding. All films showed a good dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles without affect considerably the optical properties of the films. The films were exposed in a solar simulation chamber under three xenon arc lamps with a 340nm filter. Degradation of PP/ZnO nanocomposite films was monitored by formation of oxidative groups and changes on surface microstructure. FTIR results showed that oxidation groups in nanocomposites films increased by using cuasi-spherical ZnO nanoparticles.

AbstractNanocomposite films of polymethylmethacrylate PMMA with Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by both thermolysis and casting techniques. Changes in PMMA/Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 nanocomposite (NCP) due to gamma irradiation have been measured. XRD results indicate that the gamma doses of 10–80 kGy cause intermolecular crosslinking that reduces the ordered portion in the NPs. Bonding between the NPs and the host PMMA was confirmed by FTIR. TGA results indicate an enhancement in thermal stability in the NCP films irradiated with doses 20–80 kGy. The optical band gap was reduced from 3.23 to 2.47 eV upon gamma irradiation up to 80 kGy due bonding between the NPs and PMMA which enhanced the amorphous part of the NPs. Finally, the color variation between the blank and irradiated films (ΔE) was determined. Color changes immensely when the PMMA/Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 NCP films are gamma irradiated. Values of ΔE were as much as 31.6 which is an acceptable match in commercial reproduction on printing presses.

The purpose of this paper presents the optical properties of microstructure of lightguiding plate for micro injection molding (MIM) and micro injection-compression molding (MICM). The lightguiding plate is applied on LCD of two inch of digital camera. Its radius of microstructure is from 100μm to 300μm by linearity expansion. The material of lightguiding plate uses the PMMA plastic. This paper uses the luminance distribution to make a comparison between MIM and MICM for the optical properties of lightguiding plate. The important parameters of process for optical properties are the mold temperature, melt temperature and packing pressure in micro injection molding. The important parameters of process for optical properties are the compression distance, mold temperature and compression speed in micro injection-compression molding. The process of micro injection-compression molding is better than micro injection molding for optical properties.

The influence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticle contents on the optical properties of poly (9,9′-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) conjugated polymer (PFO) has been investigated. The solution blending method was used to prepare homogenous PFO/TiO2 nanocomposite. The nanocomposite films were prepared on glass substrates using the spin-coating technique. The films were divided into two groups, the first was left to dry at room temperature while the second was heat-treated at 120 °C for 1 h. Absorption and emission spectra showed that the PFO existed in α- and β-phases morphology having monomeric, excimeric, and double excimeric states. In addition, both spectra revealed that TiO2 contents and heat treatment temperature extended the conjugation length of PFO. Finally, emission spectra for both cases exhibited decreasing in the line width of zero-phonon emission spectra and increasing in the vibronic splitting energy, upon increment of the TiO2, led to a significant increase in π-electron delocalization and lower degree in chain disorder.

In the last few years there has been an increasing interest in the possibility of recycling polymeric materials, using physical recycling. However, is it well known that polymers experience a depletion of all the properties upon recycling. These effects have been widely characterized in the literature for what concerns the mechanical or rheological properties. The changes of optical properties after recycling have been much less studied, even if, especially in food packaging, optical characteristics (above all the opacity) are of extreme importance, and thus it is quite significant to assess the effect of recycling on these properties. In this work, the influence of recycling steps on the opacity of films of a commercial grade of isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) was studied. The material was extruded several times to mimic the effect of recycling procedures. After extrusion, films were obtained by cooling samples of material at different cooling rates. The opacity of the obtained films was then measured and related to their crystallinity and morphology. It was found that opacity generally increases on increasing the amount ofαphase and for the same amount ofαphase on increasing the size of the spherulites.

The goal of this study was to investigate the optical properties of the prepared polyvinyl chloride (PVC)/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposite films. The PVC/ZnO nanocomposite films consist of the addition of different concentrations with both non-annealed ZnO nanoparticles and ZnO nanoparticles annealed at temperature of 700°C. The PVC/ZnO nanocomposite films by weight concentrations of (0 wt.%, 2.5 wt.%, 5 wt.% and 10 wt.%) have been prepared by the casting method. The optical absorbance and transmittance values of the composites films were measured in the wavelength range between (250 to 1100 nm) at room temperature by using the UV-1800 Shimadzu spectrophotometer. The optical properties (absorption coefficient, dielectric constant, refractive index, and optical conductivity) have been investigated by the ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometer. The optical parameters (direct optical energy gap, excitation energy for electronic transitions, the dispersion energy, static refractive index, static dielectric constant, optical oscillator strengths, the moments of optical spectrum, linear optical susceptibility, third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, nonlinear refractive index, high-frequency dielectric constant, the carrier concentration to the effective mass ratio, the long wavelength refractive index and the plasma frequency) were calculated. The results showed that the optical properties behavior of the PVC/ZnO nanocomposite films was found to be dependent on the ZnO concentration, and photon wavelength. In addition, the results of the study show that the optical parameters can be influenced by alter the concentration of the nonannealed and annealed a ZnO nanoparticle in the PVC polymer matrix.
