AbstractBased on full domain partition, three parallel iterative finite-element algorithms are proposed and analyzed for the Navier–Stokes equations with nonlinear slip boundary conditions. Since the nonlinear slip boundary conditions include the subdifferential property, the variational formulation of these equations is variational inequalities of the second kind. In these parallel algorithms, each subproblem is defined on a global composite mesh that is fine with size h on its subdomain and coarse with size H (H ≫ h) far away from the subdomain, and then we can solve it in parallel with other subproblems by using an existing sequential solver without extensive recoding. All of the subproblems are nonlinear and are independently solved by three kinds of iterative methods. Compared with the corresponding serial iterative finite-element algorithms, the parallel algorithms proposed in this paper can yield an approximate solution with a comparable accuracy and a substantial decrease in computational time. Contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) new parallel algorithms based on full domain partition are proposed for the Navier–Stokes equations with nonlinear slip boundary conditions; (2) nonlinear iterative methods are studied in the parallel algorithms; (3) new theoretical results about the stability, convergence and error estimates of the developed algorithms are obtained; (4) some numerical results are given to illustrate the promise of the developed algorithms.

AbstractBased on two-grid discretization, a simplified parallel iterative finite element method for the simulation of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is developed and analyzed. The method is based on a fixed point iteration for the equations on a coarse grid, where a Stokes problem is solved at each iteration. Then, on overlapped local fine grids, corrections are calculated in parallel by solving an Oseen problem in which the fixed convection is given by the coarse grid solution. Error bounds of the approximate solution are derived. Numerical results on examples of known analytical solutions, lid-driven cavity flow and backward-facing step flow are also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

Free surface flows are frequently encountered in hydraulic engineering problems including water jets, weirs and around gates. An iterative solution to the incompressible two-dimensional vertical steady Navier-Stokes equations, comprising momentum and continuity equations, is used to solve for the priori unknown free surface, the velocity and the pressure fields. The entire water body is covered by a unstructured finite element grid which is locally refined. The dynamic boundary condition is imposed for the free surface where the pressure vanishes. This procedure is done continuously until the normal velocities components vanish. To overcome numerical errors and oscillations encountering in convection terms, the SUPG (streamline upwinding Petrov-Galerkin) method is applied. The solution method is tested for different discharges onto a standard spillway geometries. The results shows good agreement with available experimental data.
