Chapter 2 contextualizes the Andaman Islands as a fieldwork location. It has two major objectives: First, it serves to introduce the reader to the Andamans as a geographical, ecological, and political space and as a site of imagination. This representation of the islands concentrates on the interplay of discourses and policies which have shaped their global, national, and local perception as well as the everyday life of the Andaman population. Second, the chapter underlines the conflation of anthropological theory, fieldwork, and biographical transformations. It demonstrates how recent theoretical trends and paradigm shifts in global and academic discourse have become enmeshed with the author’s experiences in and perceptions of the field. Elaborating on these intricate personal and professional ‘spectacles’ of the fieldworker, the author thus contextualizes the subjective conditions inherent in the production of ethnography as a type of literature.

Sensorless control technology of PMSMs is of great importance for safety and reliability in electric vehicles. Among all existing methods, only the extended flux-based method has great performance over all speed range. However, the accuracy and reliability of the extended flux rotor position observer are greatly affected by the dead-time effect. In this paper, the extended flux-based observer is adopted to develop a sensorless control system. The influence of dead-time effect on the observer is analyzed and a dead-time correction method is specially designed to guarantee the reliability of the whole control system. A comparison of estimation precision among the extended flux-based method, the electromotive force (EMF)-based method and the high frequency signal injection method is given by simulations. The performance of the proposed sensorless control system is verified by experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed extended flux-based sensorless control system with dead-time correction has satisfactory performance over full speed range in both loaded and non-loaded situations. The estimation error of rotor speed is within 4% in all working conditions. The dead-time correction method improves the reliability of the control system effectively.

The use of games as vehicles to study human-robot interaction (HRI) has been established as a suitable solution to create more realistic and naturalistic opportunities to investigate human behavior. In particular, multiplayer games that involve at least two human players and one or more robots have raised the attention of the research community. This article proposes a scoping review to qualitatively examine the literature on the use of multiplayer games in HRI scenarios employing embodied robots aiming to find experimental patterns and common game design elements. We find that researchers have been using multiplayer games in a wide variety of applications in HRI, including training, entertainment and education, allowing robots to take different roles. Moreover, robots have included different capabilities and sensing technologies, and elements such as external screens or motion controllers were used to foster gameplay. Based on our findings, we propose a design taxonomy called Robo Ludens, which identifies HRI elements and game design fundamentals and classifies important components used in multiplayer HRI scenarios. The Robo Ludens taxonomy covers considerations from a robot-oriented perspective as well as game design aspects to provide a comprehensive list of elements that can foster gameplay and bring enjoyable experiences in HRI scenarios.
