AbstractThe passive sampling method of diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) was developed to provide a quantitative and time-integrated measurement of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in waters. The DGT method in this study used HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced) material as a binding agent, and methanol as an eluent. The diffusion coefficient of MC-LR was 5.01 × 10−6 cm2 s−1 at 25 °C in 0.45 mm thick diffusion layer. This DGT method had a binding capacity of 4.24 μg per binding gel disk (3.14 cm2), ensuring sufficient capacity to measure MC-LR in most water matrices. The detection limit of HLB DGT was 0.48 ng L−1. DGT coupled to analysis by HPLC appears to be an accurate method for MC-LR monitoring. Comparison of DGT measurements for MC-LR in water and a conventional active sampling method showed little difference. This study demonstrates that HLB-based DGT is a useful tool for in situ monitoring of MC-LR in fresh waters.

We report the formation of size tunable PbS nanocubes induced by the presence of trisodium citrate during growth of PbS thin films by chemical bath deposition. The presence of citrate induces growth by the cluster mechanism which is monitored by XRD and HRSEM, along with real time light scattering and optical absorption measurements.

ABSTRACTOptical multichannel emission spectroscopie studies and ICCD (intensified charge coupled device) imaging have been applied to real-time, in situ gas phase species identification and plume structure analysis during the pulsed excimer laser deposition (PLD) of various ferroelectric thin films. Additional information on the non-excited plume species has been obtained using molecular beam-sampling mass spectrometry. The materials studied included targets of PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) and BaTiO3. For the BaTiO3 films, the partial pressure of oxygen in the buffer gas and the atomic oxygen emission within the plume both correlated with the observed lattice parameter, as determined by X-ray analysis. Reduced plume oxygen content resulted in an increased lattice parameter that, in turn, could be related to a reduced oxygen content in the film. ICCD imaging of plumes from PZT targets identified the presence of ejected particulates in the plume after multiple laser shots had worked the target surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies of the PZT target surface and film morphology, revealed cone-like formations on the target and éjecta on the films which correlated well with the ICCD observation of plume particulates.

We propose a simple method for calculation of surface self-diffusion coefficients using kinetic data on the decay of thin films – void growth and transformation of the island shape to the equilibrium. Calculations are made taking into account equilibrium wetting angle of the film on a substrate. The kinetic data on the decay of Pd thin films on sapphire and silica substrates were obtained using Auger electron spectroscopy. By in situ monitoring the intensity of the Auger signal from the film, three different stages of the decay could be distinguished. The surface self-diffusion coefficients were calculated for the temperature range 583 – 823 K. The values of the surface diffusion coefficients and the activation energies are discussed compared to those obtained by other methods.
