The main goal of this work was to evaluate the thermal insulation and sound absorption properties of open-cell rigid polyurethane foams synthesized with different contents of cooking oil-based polyol. The content of the applied bio-polyol as well as flame retardant (triethyl phosphate) in the foam formulation had a significant influence on the cellular structures of the materials. The open-cell polyurethane foams were characterized by apparent densities in the range 16–30 kg/m3. The sound absorption coefficients of the polyurethanes with various contents of bio-polyol were determined using the standing wave method (Kundt’s tube) in the frequency range of 100–6300 Hz. The effect of the content of the bio-polyol and flame retardant on the coefficient of thermal conductivity (at average temperatures of 0, 10 and 20 °C) as well as the compressive strength (at 20 and −10 °C) was analyzed. Different trends were observed in terms of the thermal insulation properties and sound absorption ability of the open-cell polyurethanes due to the addition of bio-polyol. In conclusion, it is necessary to use systems containing both petrochemical and bio-based raw materials.

The desire to mitigate climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions has led to the exploration of plant fibers as alternative materials for various industrial applications acoustics inclusive. In this investigation, sound absorption properties of barkcloth, a nonwoven fabric from Antiaris toxicaria were characterized. Theoretical empirical sound absorption models based on Delany and Bazley such as Miki, Wu and Allard – Champoux were utilized to validate the experimental data. The empirical models were in agreement with experimental data; Incorporation of an air-gap between the fabric layers had a positive influence on the overall sound absorption behavior of barkcloth fabrics rendering the fabric a good sound absorption material.

Abstract Nonwoven fabrics are widely used for thermal insulation and sound absorption purpose in construction and automobile fields. It is essential to investigate their thermal conductivity and sound absorption coefficient. Five cross-laid nonwoven fabrics are measured on the Alambeta device and Brüel & Kjær impedance tube. Bogaty and Bhattacharyya models are selected to predict the thermal conductivity, and Voronina and Miki models are used to predict the sound absorption coefficient. The predicted thermal conductivity shows a significant difference compared with the measured values. It is concluded that Bogaty and Bhattacharyya models are not suitable for high porous nonwoven fabric. In addition, the results of Voronina and Miki models for sound absorption prediction are acceptable, but Voronina model shows lower mean prediction error compared with Miki model. The results indicate that Voronina model can be used to predict the sound absorption of cross-laid nonwoven fabric.

Studies on recycled materials emerged during recent years. This paper investigates samples’ sound absorption properties for panels fabricated of a mixture of paper sludge (PS) and clay mixture. PS was the core material. The sound absorption was measured. We also consider the influence of an air gap between panels and rigid backing. Different air gaps (50, 100, 150, 200 mm) simulate existing acoustic panel systems. Finally, the PS and clay composite panel sound absorption coefficients are compared to those for a typical commercial absorptive ceiling panel. The average sound absorption coefficient of PS-clay composite panels (αavg. in the frequency range from 250 to 1600 Hz) was up to 0.55. The resulting average sound absorption coefficient of panels made of recycled (but unfinished) materials is even somewhat higher than for the finished commercial (finished) acoustic panel (αavg. = 0.51).

The aim of this paper is to obtain the strut friction–touchdown performance relation for designing the parameters involving the strut friction of the landing gear in a light aircraft. The numerical model of the landing gear is validated by drop test of single half-axle landing gear, which is used to obtain the energy absorption properties of strut friction in the landing process. Parametric studies are conducted using the response surface method. Based on the design of the experiment results and response surface functions, the sensitivity analysis of the design variables is implemented. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization is carried out for good touchdown performance. The results show that the proportion of energy absorption of friction load accounts for more than 35% of the total landing impact energy. The response surface model characterizes well for the landing response, with a minimum fitting accuracy of 99.52%. The most sensitive variables for the four landing responses are the lower bearing width and the wheel moment of inertia. Moreover, the max overloading of sprung mass in LC-1 decreases by 4.84% after design optimization, which illustrates that the method of analysis and optimization on the strut friction of landing gear is efficient for improving the aircraft touchdown performance.

To solve the problem of the effective cushioning of fast-moving mechanical components in small ring-shaped spaces, the factors affecting the compression and energy absorption properties of small-sized hollow metal tubes were studied. Simulation models were constructed to analyse the influences of tube diameter, wall thickness, relative position, and number of stacked components on the compression and energy absorption properties. The correctness of the simulation method and its output were verified by experiments, which proved the effectiveness of compression and energy absorption properties of small-sized thin-walled metal tubes. The research provides support for the application of metal tube buffers in armament launch technology and engineering practice.
