A sensitive and selective fluorescence “turn on–off” strategy for simultaneous detection of Cu2+and hemin was proposed on the basis of the formation of fluorescent CuNCs and the inner filter effect of hemin on the fluorescence of the CuNCs.

A novel turn-on fluorescence assay was developed for the rapid detection of glutathione (GSH) based on the inner-filter effect (IFE) and redox reaction. Molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs), which have stable fluorescent properties, were synthesized with hydrothermal method. Manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO2 NSs) were prepared by exfoliating the bulk δ-MnO2 material in bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution. The morphology structures of the prepared nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Studies have shown that the fluorescence of MoS2 QDs could be quenched in the presence of MnO2 NSs as a result of the IFE, and is recovered after the addition of GSH to dissolve the MnO2 NSs. The fluorescence intensity showed a good linear relationship with the GSH concentration in the range 20–2500 μM, the limit of detection was 1.0 μM. The detection method was applied to the analysis of GSH in human serum samples. This simple, rapid, and cost-effective method has great potential in analyzing GSH and in disease diagnosis.

Phenolic compounds, especially 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and chromium (VI) are highly toxic environmental pollutants. Thus, it is significantly important to establish a rapid and sensitive sensor for 4-NP and Cr(VI) monitoring in environment. In this paper, a novel approach has been adopted where E. coli-derived CDs (CDs-WT) prepared by one step hydrothermal method previously and sensitized by ampicillin (turn-on) were used as fluorescence nanoprobe (CDs-WT-Amp) for 4-NP and Cr(VI) determination based on the inner filter effect quenching mechanism (turn-off). Then, the quenching fluorescence was reversed by addition of ampicillin (turn-on). The linear ranges of 4-NP and Cr(VI) detection were 0–50[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]M and 0–25[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]M, with the limits of detection 88.89[Formula: see text]nM and 64.75[Formula: see text]nM, respectively. The “turn-on-on-off-on” fluorescent nanosensor system was successfully used to determine Cr(VI) and 4-NP in water with satisfactory results. It shows that the “turn-on-off-on” nanoprobe has great promising potential for application to environmental pollutant detection.

A boronic acid-based anthracene fluorescent probe was functionalised with an acrylamide unit to incorporate into a hydrogel system for monosaccharide detection. In solution, the fluorescent probe displayed a strong fluorescence turn-on response upon exposure to fructose, and an expected trend in apparent binding constants, as judged by a fluorescence response where D-fructose > D-galactose > D-mannose > D-glucose. The hydrogel incorporating the boronic acid monomer demonstrated the ability to detect monosaccharides by fluorescence with the same overall trend as the monomer in solution with the addition of fructose resulting in a 10-fold enhancement (≤ 0.25 M).
