This paper considers the parameter estimation for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems in an input-output setting with output error (OE) time-delay model structure. The problem of missing data is commonly experienced in industry due to irregular sampling, sensor failure, data deletion in data preprocessing, network transmission fault, and so forth; to deal with the identification of LTI systems with time-delay in incomplete-data problem, the generalized expectation-maximization (GEM) algorithm is adopted to estimate the model parameters and the time-delay simultaneously. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

It has been shown that the stability of LTI time-delayed systems with respect to the delays can be analyzed in two equivalent domains: (i) delay space (DS) and (ii) spectral delay space (SDS). Considering a broad class of linear time-invariant time delay systems with multiple delays, the equivalency of the stability transitions along the transition boundaries is studied in both spaces. For this we follow two corresponding radial lines in DS and SDS, and prove for the first time in literature that they are equivalent. This property enables us to extract local stability transition features within the SDS without going back to the DS. The main advantage of remaining in SDS is that, one can avoid a non-linear transition from kernel hypercurves to offspring hypercurves in DS. Instead the potential stability switching curves in SDS are generated simply by stacking a finite dimensional cube called the building block (BB) along the axes. A case study is presented within the report to visualize this property.

AbstractIn some applications (especially in the filed of control theory) the characteristic equation of system contains fractional powers of the Laplace variable s possibly in combination with exponentials of fractional powers of s. The aim of this paper is to propose an easy-to-use and effective formula for bounded-input boundedoutput (BIBO) stability testing of a linear time-invariant system with fractional-delay characteristic equation in the general form of $$\Delta \left( s \right) = P_0 \left( s \right) + \sum\nolimits_{i = 1}^N {P_i \left( s \right)\exp ( - \zeta _i s^{\beta _i } ) = 0}$$, where P i(s) (i = 0,...,N) are the so-called fractional-order polynomials and ξ i and β i are positive real constants. The proposed formula determines the number of the roots of such a characteristic equation in the right half-plane of the first Riemann sheet by applying Rouche’s theorem. Numerical simulations are also presented to confirm the efficiency of the proposed formula.

The stabilizing decentralized controller design problem for (possibly descriptor-type) linear time-invariant neutral time-delay systems is considered. A design approach, based on the continuous pole placement algorithm and the decentralized pole assignment algorithm, is proposed. A design example is also presented, to demonstrate the proposed approach.

Linear time-invariant descriptor-type time-delay systems are considered. A robust stabilizing controller design approach for such systems is introduced. Uncertainties both in the time-delays and in other system parameters are considered. A frequency-dependent scalar bound on such uncertainties is first derived. Once this bound is found, the controller design is completely based on the nominal model. However, satisfying a scalar frequency-dependent condition, which uses the derived bound, guarantees robust stability. An example is also presented to illustrate the proposed approach
