SummaryPurpose: Comparison of qualitative and quantitative sonography with the lymphoscintigraphic function test and clinical findings in legs. Patients, methods: In 33 patients a lymphoscintigraphic function test of legs combined with measurement of lymph node uptake was performed and subsequently compared with sonography. Sonographic criteria were: Thickness of cutis, thickness of subcutanean fatty tissue and presence of liquid structures or fine disperse tissue structure of lower limbs, foots and toes. Results: In 51 legs uptake values lie in the pathologic area, in four legs in the grey area and in ten legs in the normal area. The cutis thickness in the lower leg shows no significant correlation with the uptake. The determination of the thickness of the subcutanean fatty tissue of the lower leg and of the cutis thickness of the feet turned out to be an unreliable method. In 47% of the medial lower legs and in 57% of the lateral lower legs with clinical lymphoedema sonography is falsely negative. Conclusion: Early lymphoedema is only detectable with the lymphoscintigraphic function test. In the case of clinical lymphoedema clinical examination is more reliable than sonography.

The paper presents the results of physical modelling of the plastic deformation of the Mg/Al bimetallic specimens using the Gleeble 3800 simulator. The plastic deformation of Mg/Al bimetal specimens characterized by the diameter to thickness ratio equal to 1 was tested in compression tests. The aim of this work was determination of the range of parameters as temperature and strain rate that mainly influence on the plastic deformation of Mg/Al bars during metal forming processes. The tests were carried out for temperature range from 300 to 400°C for different strain rate values. The stock was round 22.5 mm-diameter with an Al layer share of 28% Mg/Al bars that had been produced using the explosive welding method. Based on the analysis of the obtained testing results it has been found that one of the main process parameters influencing the plastic deformation the bimetal components is the initial stock temperature and strain rate values.

Geological strength index GSI, disturbance factor (D), material constant mi, and uniaxial compressive strength σci of the intact rock are essential input parameters IPs of the Hoek–Brown H−B criterion. Mechanical parameters MPs of the engineering rock mass, including elastic modulus E, cohesion c, and internal friction angle φ estimated by the H–B criterion, and the predicted excavation response of surrounding rock, including the displacement and excavation damage zone EDZ based on the MPs, are of high relevance with the four IPs of the H–B criterion. In this paper, the deep and huge underground cavern excavated in basalt from a hydropower station under construction in the southwest of China is used to analyse the sensitivity of the IPs on the MPs, the displacement, and EDZ of the surrounding rock mass. Firstly, the H–B criterion is applied to estimate the MPs, among which the IPs are obtained from a series of in situ and laboratory tests, including borehole camera observation, wave velocity test, uniaxial and triaxial compression tests, and so on. Secondly, the sensitivity relationships between IPs, MPs, and prediction results of displacement and EDZ are established and described quantitatively by the sensitivity factor (si). Results show that the MPs of the rock mass are more sensitive to GSI and D⋅GSI and σci are high-sensitivity parameters affecting the displacement and EDZ. Finally, the variations in the estimated MPs and associated prediction results concerning excavation response, which are caused by the uncertainties in the determination of the IPs, are further quantified. This study provides a straightforward assessment for the variability of the rock mass parameters estimated by the H–B criterion. It also gives a valuable reference to similar geotechnical engineering for the determination of rock mass parameters in the preliminary design.

The micro-pillar compression test is emerging as a novel way to measure the mechanical properties of materials. In this paper, we systematically conducted finite element analysis to evaluate the capability of using a micro-compression test to probe the mechanical properties of both elastic and plastic materials. We found that this test can provide an alternative way to accurately and robustly measure strain, and to some extent, stress. Therefore, this test can be used to measure some strain related quantities, such as strain to failure, or the stress-strain relations for plastic materials.
