A model was used, where the total gear mesh stiffness was approximated by two constant stiffness levels, in order to analyze the influence of the contact ratio on the dynamic response of spur gears. Due to the stiffness variation there is parametric excitation of the transmission error, which generally causes tooth separation at certain critical rotational speeds. The present paper discloses a method to analytically calculate which contact ratio to use in order to avoid tooth separation near a specific critical rotational speed. [S1050-0472(00)02604-0]

Backlash is a key internal excitation on the dynamic response of planetary gear transmission. After the gear transmission running for a long time under load torque, due to tooth wear accumulation, the backlash between the tooth surface of two mating gears increases, which results in a larger and irregular backlash. However, the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear is generally neglected in lots of dynamics analysis for epicyclic gear trains. In order to investigate the impact of backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic behavior of compound planetary gear set, in this work, first a static tooth surface wear prediction model is incorporated with a dynamic iteration methodology to get the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear for one pair of mating teeth under the condition that contact ratio equals to one. Then in order to introduce the tooth accumulated wear into dynamic model of compound planetary gear set, the backlash excitation generated by tooth accumulated wear for each meshing pair in compound planetary gear set is given under the condition that contact ratio equals to one and does not equal to one. Last, in order to investigate the impact of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear on dynamic response of compound planetary gear set, a nonlinear lumped-parameter dynamic model of compound planetary gear set is employed to describe the dynamic relationships of gear transmission under the internal excitations generated by worn profile, meshing stiffness, transmission error, and backlash. The results indicate that the introduction of the increasing backlash generated by tooth accumulated wear makes a significant influence on the bifurcation and chaotic characteristics, dynamic response in time domain, and load sharing behavior of compound planetary gear set.

An analytic model to compute the efficiency of spur gears has been developed. It is based on the application of a non-uniform model of load distribution obtained from the minimum elastic potential criterion and a simplified non-uniform model of the friction coefficient along the path of contact. Both conventional and high transverse contact ratio spur gears have been considered. Analytical expressions for the power losses due to friction, for the transmitted power and for the efficiency are presented. From this model, a complete study of the influence of some design parameters (as the number of teeth, the gear ratio, the pressure angle, the addendum modification coefficient, etc.) on the efficiency is presented.

Abstract The nonlinear equation for the rotational vibration of a pair of spur gears has a restriction that the analytical solution of the equation cannot be obtained. In this paper, the linear equation of vibration is derived theoretically and its physical model, i.e. the linear model of vibration is presented. The analytical solution of the linear equation, which is derived by analytical method, agrees well with the numerically calculated result by the nonlinear equation. By analyzing the analytical solution of the linear equation in detail, we clarified the relation between the waveforms of the vibration and the profile error of gear pairs, and also found that the effect of the contact ratio to the vibration is large and complex. The equivalent error, accounting for effects of the static load, the time-varying stiffness and the profile error of gear pairs, is proposed in this paper. It can be considered as promising for evaluating the profile error, because the vibration of gear pairs is excited mainly by the equivalent error. Finally, for confirming the above results, the vibration of two tested gear pairs has been measured by an experimental set-up for this purpose.

A method is presented that allows the accurate measurement of the tooth pair stiffness of a pair of spur gears. The method reveals the stiffness behaviour throughout the full length of the normal path of contact and also into the extended contact region when tooth corner contact occurs. The method makes use of the properties of transmission error plots for mean and alternating components over a range of tooth loads (Harris maps). It avoids the usual problem when measuring tooth deflections that deflections of other test rig components are difficult to eliminate. Also included are predicted Harris maps for a pair of high contact ratio spur gears, showing the effects of various simplifying assumptions, together with a measured map.

Simple, traditional methods for computation of the efficiency of spur gears are based on the hypotheses of constant friction coefficient and uniform load sharing along the path of contact. However, none of them is accurate. The friction coefficient is variable along the path of contact, though average values can be often considered for preliminary calculations. Nevertheless, the nonuniform load sharing produced by the changing rigidity of the pair of teeth has significant influence on the friction losses, due to the different relative sliding at any contact point. In previous works, the authors obtained a nonuniform model of load distribution based on the minimum elastic potential criterion, which was applied to compute the efficiency of standard gears. In this work, this model of load sharing is applied to study the efficiency of both standard and high contact ratio involute spur gears (with contact ratio between 1 and 2 and greater than 2, resp.). Approximate expressions for the friction power losses and for the efficiency are presented assuming the friction coefficient to be constant along the path of contact. A study of the influence of some transmission parameters (as the gear ratio, pressure angle, etc.) on the efficiency is also presented.
